Aux belt tensioning, Please Help!

Featured Replies

Hi people,

Ive got my VRS home now, but i had to take the aux belt off, but it wont go back on!

I dont have a very long 16mm spanner, so im using two (one locking into the other) i get under the car and turn it clock wise to release the tensioner, but it gets to a point where it will not go any further, and yet the belt still wont go on!

its the same tensioner, belt etc as before i havnt changed anything, it came off easily enough, but it wont go back on!

any advice?

When we put the AUX belt on Taylor93's car it was a tight fit.

While Taylor was laying underneath with two interlocked spanners on the tensioner I had to use a small prybar to get the belt on a bit of the altenator pulley and then stick a torx bit in and manually crank the pulley round to get the belt on it, otherwise it popped off when you released the tensioner.

Major faff, it's really tight.

Just a thought, maybe worth getting a new belt to check it's length?

well i turned the tensioner till i could slide a small screwdriver in to hold it in place. that was about 80% of the way off, then i got the belt ready, turned it the last 20% and it still wont go onto the alternator pulley!

Would heating the belt up help it all or just cause stress to it!

Definately sounds like the belt might be undersized if your having to go through that much trouble to get it on, if you have the part number to hand of the belt can you not use google to find out its manufactured length?

Copied from another site :

I have read, on here, of people struggling to get the new belt on. It was about 20F here when I did mine and figured I would probably have trouble too. I put mine in a warm oven for about 20 minutes before putting it on and it slipped on very easily.

I know people will question the affect of putting the belt in an oven. I talking 100-120 degrees. I was in the rubber business for 30 years, and trust me, it will not affect the belt other than making it easier to get on. Kind of like keeping your new tires in warm place prior to installation.

well left the belt in the oven for 10 minutes at 75 degrees, was quite hot when it came out. my landlord had seen what i had been doing, and after hearing the colourful language, he brought out a 1M Crowbar.

Very heath-robinson, but it worked, very very well!

so its on and the cars running again :D woo!

Haha not quite! I still need to fit rear coilies and really that's it's.

Although the fact that the front wishbone bushes haven't been fitted correctly is messing with my spidy senses
