Problem with removing the thottle body?

I've been having fluctuating revs on my Fabia mk1 1.4 16V on low to idle revs intermittently, which seem to go away when I clean the top of the throttle body with a quick spray of intake cleaner and give a good wipe.

 

Now, I would like to remove the throttle body to ensure it is properly clean throughout, and my questions are: -

 

  1. If I remove the TB, clean and replace, will it need resetting by VAG.COM? Is this something I can manually do myself without it?
  2. When the engine is off, is it normal for the butterfly to be slightly ajar?

I feel confident about removing the TB and cleaning, I'm just worried I'll mess up the settings. I've read stories of people online messing the settings up because of this.

It doesn't work, you need to adapt it or just don't unplug it.

Lifted it off without unplugging. Glad I did, a clean was very much needed!

Good god, I've never seen one that bad! Bet your plenum is filthy inside as well as the EGR pipework, consider fitting a catch can if your engine is breathing that heavily.

As said, remove it from the engine but keep it plugged in. I've removed a lot of petrol ones on vags and I've had to recalibrate all of them.

Even of you do unplug it it still works but idles funny and over about a mile will put an engine management light on.

I use launch diagnostics to calibrate them so doesn't need to be dealer or vagcom.

I just used this procedure after removing mine and it was fine...

 

Do not touch throttle pedal while doing this -

Turn ignition on fully but do not crank

*wait 60 seconds*

Turn ignition fully off but do not remove key

*wait 10 seconds*

Start car as normal. (done)

That's something I'll look into definitely. I was going to use some engine flush next and change the oil to the best quality I can afford. Even though it had a full service a couple of months ago. It definately looked like no-one has removed the TB before.

Actually, I may just go for removing the inlet manifold and giving that a good clean. Looking down into it, it's caked up too.

 

Is it really important to get new gaskets/seals when doing this? I've looked and the AUB engine doesn't have a gasket for both the inlet manifold and the throttle body, just rubber o-rings instead.

Which is why you don't need to worry about new ones unless you actually damage them, just a light smear of grease when you reassemble will seal them up again.
