BEWARE of liquid air fresheners.

Featured Replies

Saw a Merc C Class 220 Elegance radio/sat nav head completely ruined by one of these things today.

Replacement cost in excess of a thousand pounds probably.

Like many other manufacturers, they are using this crappy 'soft to touch' rubberised paint to 'enhance' their products bibs and bobs.

It's useless and totally not fit for purpose, as it rubs thin after about 3 years in 'high wear' areas that are subject to touching.

That besides, the inevitable damage can be rapidly sped up by these vile liquid in a bottle air fresheners that you attach to the air vents.

Slightest spillage...as in this case...and it acts just like a paint stripper, leaving the surface of this item looking like it had been hit with a blow torch, with the white base plastic showing through amongst the frizzed up damaged black final finish.

Just be aware and careful with these products if you really must use them.

There probably is some sort of warning and disclaimer on the packaging, but who actually reads them? :notme:

Didn't know that!

What actually is the liquid?

Mrs Bealine's Seat Mii has a horrible greasy stain on the driver's seat thanks to the liquid air freshener from "Bath and Bodyworks" in the USA.   I have tried every product to attempt to remove it without success - I have written emails to "Bath and Bodyworks" asking what the gel liquid consists of but all I get is a standard Customer Relations "We're sorry you had a problem - have a nice day!" reply.

I'm going to try the gall soap now!

What's 'gall soap', and how did the missus get air freshener on the seat?

I've even seen those 'Magic Trees' do much damage if left to rub against rubberised plastics btw.

Yes I've recoloured half of my interior mirror backing with one

Oil based stains are very difficult to get out of those plastics. A paste made from cornstarch and water or baking soda and water is supposed to work, but I've never tried it.

Clas Ohlson have gall soap, but I wouldn't use it on soft/rubberised plastics as it contain 'natural oils' - the very thing that is causing the problem here.

Nooo! I had that in my Golf when I bought it, and it was vile! It lingered for ages too. Never did smell 'clean' after that.

Yes - liquid crystal if I remember the 'Technical Lexicon' book I got with my 330d correctly. (Just explains how stuff like auto mirrors/wipers, PDC etc. works)

Oh its beautiful!

Everyone always wants to know what it is and it lasts forever

Im addicted to them

Top tip - save money on expensive car air fresheners by simply washing regularly, using deodorant and not farting in your car.

Or just roll down the windows. :giggle:

I've got their vanilla one - which I quite like.

Ah, but how much does heating that water, plus the cost of the water itself and shower gel etc. cost compared to the cost of an air freshener. This needs further investigation!

Rolling down the windows would just result in forcibly inhaling the lovely 'green' gases kicked out by 100 of Oxford's finest buses? Nooo thanks!

(I hate buses  )

Good advice, you lot must stink, I've never needed an air freshener in my car, keep myself clean, the carpets hoovered and lower the window when I drop my guts and all is good!

I used to smoke, in my van it was more or less constantly

while ever I was driving it..

Never been much of a one for smoking in my car though,

if it was an 'emergency' (LOL) then I might have made the exception.

I don't smoke anymore but still buy air fresheners.

Can't find a good air freshener for my bike though...

Try websearching for $product_name + "COSHH data card".

I hate car air fresheners! I hate getting in taxis when they have them all over the car... makes me sneeze!

All they do is mask the smells and often find them over powering.

Just clean your car regularly and give the seats a wipe over with some shampoo to keep any smells at bay.

Oh, and be VERY wary of anything that you stick to your windows with clear suction pads too btw....especially the windscreen, as I've seen one instance a few years ago of one acting as a magnifying glass and burning an arc across the dashboard!  :o
