Engine management light disconnected!?

Featured Replies

Just purchased a 54 plate vrs, with 140k. I already own a 05 with moon miles and still going strong.

I've noticed on this one that when you turn on the ignition all the lights cycle apart from the engine management one !? It doesn't light up or anything. The cars running fine. Is it possible that someone has disconnected it?

The car has a none standard exhaust on it but apart from that is same as my one. Do older ones not have a EML possibly ? Or I'm even wondering if someone mapped it out if that's even possible?? Can I turn it back on any way ( Never thought I'd say that!!! :/ ) would a VAG- com reader help?

Ideas?

Cheers Chris

Is it taped over inside the dash panel ?

...or has the LED just been snapped off using pliers.

I'll have to check behind the panel - guessing that's not a 5min job :/

It's pretty easy to get the instruments out on most cars, don't see why this should be any different, remember you can move the steering wheel right back and down to improve access.

Looks like the previous owner is trying to hide something, most likely related to the exhaust.

Mine doesn't have an eml light. Run an instruments test from vcds and see if it's there. You can also try by disconnecting the battery to reset the ecu and after you reconnect it and turn the ignition on for the 1st time, some other lights should be on, as the one for the traction control or abs, if you don't have them yet. You can also check id it is tapped in dark with a flash light. If you can see the shape, its there but your instrument panel doesn't have that function.

Alexandru - what year is yours?

I didn't think the diesels had a separate CEL, it uses the glowplug light instead.

My 1999 diesel Octavia has a space for a EPC light but it doesn't have one.

Petrol - EPC light, Diesel - Glowplug light.

Guys, the OP has not one but TWO VRS's, one with a CEL and one without, one is an 05 plate the other is a 54 plate, where is all this rampant speculation getting us, VRS's have CEL so what gives with all the craziness?

In that case do both cars have the same clusters. Also other posts suggest they don't all have CELs.

All the other posts in this thread which don't have CEL are not from VRS owners, yes, not all Fabias have CEL. Does your Octavia have CEL?

DId Skoda change instrument clusters on the VRS between the 2004 model and the 2005 model?

My old octy didn't, my current one does.

There could be two MY difference between a 54 and 05 plate cars, depending on when they were actually built and registered.

The OP has both cars so just needs VCDS to check.

They all have a CEL regardless of year or engine. The instrument cluster was the same throughout the model run. at least one member  has had a car where the cluster had been dismantled and the light taped over.

If you have someone local with VCDS or own it yourself then scan 01-Engine for fault codes. The car may be running fine, but several codes bring on the CEL with the car running fine.

If the led was actually removed other lights in the circuit wouldn't work, so I think it may be taped as suggested.

As a thought if it's had an aftermarket exhaust could it have had an egr delete? Could be the cause of the cel light that needed hiding

I've seen cluster circuit boards with the CEL LED just snapped using pliers, just like removing a bulb, it's only a little surface mount LED, if you break it off the board everything else still works just fine.

I will check tomorrow and see if there is any sign of an egr delete. If so any ideas if there would be any major problems in reversing it if just the pipes blocked or disconnected. From memory the egr is still there but May have bolts in hoses didn't look close enough.

Oh ok. Where I've changed the smds on some of these cars, if a bulb fails it can take out a section of the lights as it breaks the circuit

Seems odd that your MPI doesn't have an EML light. I thought they all did.

I haven't seen it on a Fabia, just other stuff.

Looking at it appears car has a Milltek exhaust system on it. Not sure if cat removed. Would that make difference to EML ?

Mine is a 2000 mk1 fabia comfort 1.4mpi 8v atz engine.

Ok so today I removed the instrument panel - it quickly became clear someone had been in here before!

The EML had been removed!! I will plug into scanner and see if any faults but at least that solves the "no light" mystery!

The car has no egr delete.

Cheers Chris

Thought so, it's surprisingly common in the trade, particularly on cars bought at auction.
