Buying cars online and subsequent warranty / service issues

Having recently read in a motoring magazine that having purchased a car from a dealer that subsequently went out of business, this customer tried to get a problem fixed at the next nearest franchised dealer but they "didn't want to know!"

He then had to go to the manufacturer, Nissan, to try and get the issue resolved.

I was under the impression that it didn't matter where a car was purchased from and that warranty problems could be resolved at any franchised dealer.

I am currently thinking about a new car for my good lady and am getting good internet quotes from remote dealers but once having purchased this way, I don't want any problems like that quoted above.

Has anyone had similar experience? Your views will be gratefully received.

My Superb was supplied by a Carlisle dealer but warranty work was done 400 miles away elsewhere. 

As for internet brokers try carwow, once they have given you all the quotes YOU choose who to use, you never pay a penny to carwow and all correspondence is done directly with the dealer you have chosen to use.

The warranty is with Škoda not the dealer.

My last four purchases were of a similar nature,all Skoda transfer to a franchised dealerships.No problem what so ever.

 

Already lined up the same for my new Golf.

Was it definitely a new car, or at least within the manufacturers warranty period?

I've had to get warranty repairs done elsewhere on my Mk2 Octavia after the original dealer closed down.

I'd have no hesitation in buying new from a remote dealer, but wouldn't expect my local one to bend over backwards if I had issues.

Just be sure that a vehicle supplied is one carrying a Manufacturers 3 year UK Warranty, and you can extend if you wish at time of purchase. say an extra 2 years.

 

It is highly unlikely that a Right Hand Drive car will come with a EU 'Mainland Europe' 2 year Manufacturers Warranty, but it can happen,

and i know someone that was stuffed that way just this year with a Citroen Grand Picasso that he got an amazingly good deal on.

I have not seen him again to find out if the Issue was it was sourced by the Broker from Ireland (Not Northern Ireland.) or what the full story was.

It used to be that the first year of the warranty was manufacturer supported but years two and three were covered by the dealer network. Not sure if that is still the case or not, but could explain why difficulties were experienced by the driver you mentioned, particularly if there aren't too many dealers for that make.

Hmmm, I had unfortunate cause to go through this myself. I bought my Subaru, unseen, as an ex-demo from a Scottish dealer, who delivered it to my door. I discovered a couple of days later there was a small leak in the rear diff (a small amount of oil near one of the driveshaft seals on an otherwise pristine diff). I called my local Subaru dealer (obviously different franchise) and they sorted it out without any issue with the offer of a free courtesy car as it was all covered by the manufacturer warranty.

 

So, if its under Skoda warranty I would definitely question why they are not honouring it. Can you ring a different dealer? Don't say you just bought it (if that is the mistake you made), just that you have an issue with your car and it is still within warranty.

We sourced a car through a web broker but then only dealt with the specific dealership which was a few hundred miles away but they delivered and collected the part ex car still at a much better price than the local dealership. The car was then serviced at the local dealers annually and had two issues. The first was a minor problem with the retractable boot cover which was replaced under warranty, no issues. The second was a problem picked up at the 4 year service where they said the water pump was leaking. Now at this point I should point out it was a Toyota that had a 3 year warranty but they had not long after we got it brought out the 5 year warranty so I stood my ground and the dealer 'contacted' toyota and they agreed to cover all costs.

The only thing I think you lose out on is service packages which can be worthwhile in some cases. However as said above the manufacturers warranty is with the manufacturer not the garage, the garage gets paid by them to do the work so they are generally more than happy to do it. Sometimes a decent service manager is good to have, the Skoda local to me has a good one who sorted out replacement badges, trim and wheels all under warranty with no issues or arguments.
