Amundsen upgrade, perhaps

Featured Replies

Question, is it worth the time and money to swap from the Amundsen 310 SatNav unit to a Columbus RNS 510, what do I gain/lose, if anything ?

Any issues with fitting it, or parts required etc would be useful info too

Car is SE+ spec.with Bluetooth

That's a very subjective question. In my mind, yes. The Octavia II, Fabia II etc. all look ok with the Amundsen, but the interior of the Superb just looks a million times better when you have the Columbus. The system itself may not be the fastest or the latest, but it works well in my opinion.

Fitting it should be quite straightforward, 1 potential issue regarding the BT though;

The Amundsen (RNS 310) has the BT box underneath the passenger seat. This would mean the swap is plug and play.

The Amundsen+ (RNS 315) might be the one with the integral BT module. This would mean you will lose the BT capability if you remove the Amundsen+. So the Columbus would require the external box to be installed. If you remove the Amundsen, on the side there's a sticker. if it sais "MAC 00.00.00.00" it doesn't have the BT module, and you can swap the Columbus straight in. If it sais "MACwithaloadofnumbersafterit" it does have the internal module. Note; not every Amundsen+ has the internal module, just the early ones.

You might want to check underneath your passenger seat, see if there's a large black plastic box about 15cm x 10cm, in a foam container or screwed to a metal plate.

Apart from the cost (which in my mind is worth it), there's also the issue of theft, but the Columbus system is not very highly sought after by your local scum, the RNS 510 system is another matter...

It's just a Amundsen, BT box I think is under drivers seat, I had the plastic cover off it the other day when I vacced the car out

So you're saying there might be potential theft issues if the Columbus 510 is fitted ?

Well the VW RNS 510 system has always been very popular with thieves. The Skoda version (at least in my country) is 99% safe, because it's a Columbus, the unit has green backlighting instead of the VW red so no risk there. Just saying if you live in a area prone to car brakeins, it something worth thinking about.

But I would still get it  :p
