  • If James' Golf is anything to go by it's a very capable base car. Even thought that's a V6. 4x4 gives a lot of usability at the cost of a little fun and the tuning potential of the 1.8t is huge. It

No worries with a K Series. I drove my VVC engined Rover 200 all day, like I did in the video below, until it caught fire I then replaced the melted bits and took it back to the track two weeks late

  • There is also an STOC member bringing his Fiesta ST (mk7) for info. Hope you can make it, might be a bit of an eye opener.

There might also be an ST MK7 there too if Richard brings that too

Or a 500bhp Skyline... ;)

I've got the day off so will be down there to spectate!

was looking at an mg tf, but ... K series engine? a big worry?

I know of plenty of TF's (and F's for that mater) used on track without any problems with the engine.

Right, so ive seen a mx5 at a local garage, it needs a bit of work, few rust spots and sills look like may need a bit of repair, softtop is in good nick tho. its a mk1 97 reg.

any reccomendations on what year is preferable to look for when after an mx5?

Also. what size engine would be preferable? 1.8i or the 1.6? ive heard suggestions for both so far on our friend google

IMO the MX-5 will be quite slow compared to other cars at the track, also a car with a tin worm infection such as the one you are looking at will only get worse. Maybe find one for a bit more money and less rot.

Is the A3 of no use to you?

At this current time I don't know what Im doing yet, still window shopping.

For cheapness and reliability--------

FWD  -  Clio 172/182    The engines are really reliable, the rest of the car is suspect.

RWD  -  MX5        Easy available tuning parts.

Both can be had for about £1000 in reasonable running order.

Going back some... <whooo wooshing of time travel>  Why not a Saxo or 106?

Trust you know about checking the sills for rust, it's their Achilles heel.

Yea thanks mate, already did quite alot of investigation into issues with them :)

It all depends on your budget you have to remember you have to drive it to and from said tracks if you don't have a car trailer,

Never driven a MX5 but i have serviced a couple in past that wern't that old and had rust rear archs and rear sill's, so as said above watch out for that,

I wouldn't knock the french stuff to much as the sporty clios are a hoot to drive altho common for noisy dephaser pullys and cambelt are interesting,

I've done a couple of trackdays in my mk1 VRS and altho it was good fun it never felt totally at home altho the A3 is 4wd which should help its still a heavy car or it is compared to the MX5 and clio which means bigger brakes and will use more fuel,

I polished off a full tank (65quids worth) of optimax in a morning at blyton in my VRS and have friends with integras and celicas that managed the whole day and the drive home on one tank

Can't emphasise enough that rust is the thing to look for on MX5s and newer doesn't always mean better, in fact quite the opposite as cost cutting came in in the later years.

For track use go for a Mk1 (pre 98 with the pop up lights) and don't shy away from imports in fact these are generally far preferable and tend to be less rusty (depending on how long they have been in the uk) and tend to have some nice goodies that the uk ones don't have (LSD, chassis bracing, air con, leather etc.)

There was a bit of strangulation on power with the 1.6s after a certain year, 93 IIRC. Imports are all the higher power variant, again IIRC.
