Fuel Indicator Stopped Working? URGENT HELP

Featured Replies

Seem to have bumped in to another problem with the 1.9 TDI !! The fuel indicator has been playing up since we got the car. Some times it will be on red later on it would go up again. Even when the fuel light would be on some times it used to say I had a 1/4 tank!! Only realized the fault when we broke down due to no fuel!

Anyway it seems to have got worse now. The fuel light itself isn't even coming on now. And the fuel indicator doesn't move at all now. Just stuck at the bottom. No way I can tell now how much fuel is in the car.

What can it be?? Where do I look?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank You

You can replace it from under the rear seat.

Yeah from what ive researched I managed to figure out it was under the seat.

Thanks for the link Steve very handy that!

How do i go about fitting it? is it easy to remove?

Do i need to drain all the fuel out the system as there are 2 pipes and I don't know if they have any fuel in them.

Thanks

Replacement described here: http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk1/engine/1.9/74_tdi_engine_mechanics/fuel_supply_gas_operation/removing_and_installing_parts_of_the_fuel_supply_part_1/removing_and_installing_the_fuel_delivery_unit/fuel_gauge_sender_unit/

No need to drain the fuel, but might be a good idea to run it low. You might get a bit of spillage from the pipes but nothing drastic. It says you need a special tool to turn the unit but I'm sure you could improvise.

What's so urgent?

he might travel alot and don't wanna be caught out with fuel gauge i'd say thats urgent no special tools pull the seat up and u'll see its easy enough

That's brilliant ! Easier then expected!

Cheers for that!

What's so urgent?

Maybe because the car gets driven a lot and breaking down due to fuel is the reason.

Quick Update regarding the problem.

I came abit lazy and never got round to ordering the part! And guess what the car broke down due to no fuel yesterday. Yes I know embarrassing LOL. Anyway I figured i better fix the problem asap. So I had a go at taking out the old one out and took a picture before i did. Once i had loosened it I couldn't figure out which way the arrow is supposed to go. Couldn't see the arrow on the car itself because of the dirt round the pump. Figured it out in the end and when i positioned the arrow to the correct position it was in a different position to what it was before.

Now I don't know if that was the problem or not. Looks to me like a previous owner has messed with it before. Or the problem might have been happening and they tried to fix it but didn't put it back together properly.

I'm not sure so what I might do is just keep an eye on it and see if the fuel needle works properly.

Purchased the part and fitted it. Very easy to do ! And the fuel indicator shot up from 1/4 to 3/4.. There was a lot of fuel in the tank so 3/4 seems right now!

Thanks for all the help guys

Well done :)

Hi.. thought the problem was resolved but now I have another problem.. When I fuel up it goes towards empty and when the fuel goes low it goes towards full. Its basically going the opposite as it should.

I've even taken it out and refitted it to no success.

Don't know if I've fitted it wrong or if the one I bought has a fault!

I've attached a picture of how I've fitted it.. Is it fitted correctly or wrong?

Also I cant figure out what the 2 little arrows are. The main one points to the arrow on the car itself but don't understand what the little 2 point to..

Thanks !

I'll take a pic of mine for you.

Hmmm, yours looks a bit different. Working backwards sounds like it's connected the wrong way. The plug will only fit one way though, right?

Looks to me like my connectors are in the wrong way.. Your blue is next to the white block while the black is next to mine.

No arrows on the pipes of mine..

The main big arrow is pointing to the arrow on the car so I dnt know how it can be the wrong way.. Yep the plug only fits one way..

Shall I try point the arrow to the opposite side and see if that works?

Nah, I think your pipes are the right way round. I dont think your car would even run if they weren't. Anyway, that wouldn't affect the fuel gauge as that just works off the float.

If the main arrow is aligned with the tank one then that's correct too but that still wouldn't affect the level reading. I'm stumped TBH :S

Yeah im confused myself. I dont know if the pump I purchased off eBay could have a fault. Might have to send him a message..

Yeah I'm thinking it might be faulty too.

Just another thought - make sure there's no dirt or corrosion at the connector plug and on the pump connectors. A bad earth connection can make the gauge read backwards!

  • Author

yeah I checked the connectors. They all seem fine. No corrosion no dirt on the connectors. The pump itself is a bit dirty in the pics due to little spills of diesel but the connections seem fine. Will have a little play around with it tomorrow...

Your car is diesel?  I thought the 1.2 HTP is petrol?
