bluefin or not?

Featured Replies

Hi all I've been thinking of a slight performance upgrade and am thinking of the bluefin, has anybody run this software and was it worth the outlay? Cheers nick.

I'm thinking of this upgrade too so I shall keep a close eye on any replies.....

From experience of bluefin I think you'd be better off with a Shark STS unit or similar simply down to the quality of the software. :)

In your opinion yeti man do you think the sts is worth it and is it preferable over say a tuning box? I've mapped previous cars but don't want to go down that road, cheers nick.

Tbh my comment comes from the simple fact that from my own experience, the actual Shark software is way ahead of the Superchips software - its preferable to any of the six other manufactures maps Ive run in the past in fact. I wouldn't consider anything less now (unless perhaps Shark didn't have a solution for my vehicle at the time). With that thinking, an STS unit would allow you to take it off when needed :) My limited experience of tuning boxes has simply been that they aren't quite as good compared to a decent map - smoothness and adjustability. Technically, I also don't like how they operate around the ECU but many on here have them and say good things about the performance gain. :)

If the ecu is still the same encrypted one as my blackline and things on the mapping front haven't changed sinse when I looked into this last year the bluefin needed the ecu 'enabling' which involved opening it up before the unit would work with my ecu and the sts unit from shark wasn't compatable so you'll need to phone both superchips and shark to ask what the current situation is. If it's still the same a box will be your only option if like me you you don't want to go down the traditional remap route. DTUK are well thought of by those that have them and Andrew is very helpful if you need him to run through the options.

I'm currently running the CRDt+ unit from DTUK on my Yeti and I do love it. But I'm heading over to Shark in a couple of weeks, lending them my car to develop the OBD mapping (no ECU removal) for the 1.6 tdi. So I'll be able to give a side by side comparison of one of the latest box solutions vs one of the best mapping outfits for VAG group cars.

Would be great if someone could bypass the ECU encryption on the 2.0 diesel as well, without having to "enable" it.

So sts not available for fl superb 2 then jake.

I didn't think that STS or Bluefin was available for any 2.0 CR diesel in the Superb without someone first cracking open the ECU, as they are 128-bit encrypted.

Would love to know if a remapper has been able to do it though...

Shark can already map the CR 2.0 via the OBD port, give them a call.

Cheers, is that with the STS handheld?

I'm sure it was but best check with Ben or Dave at Shark :)

Ive got a twin channel tuning box from TDI Tuning and its very good its been fitted to my 13 plate superb 2.0 cr 170 4x4 for about a year and i love it, not the cheapest of tuning boxes but the service you get is stunning. They claim on the full performance setting you can achieve around the 220 bhp and i can beleive it as well. Bearing in mind we are Revo agent and  i do agree that a remap is always going to be better, but i think this box is as close as you will get to a remap. other plus point to these boxes is  the ecu has to be split open and unlocked to remap  and if the car needs to go into the main dealers who are now equipped with "Odis" the remap can be seen and if its a engine or engine related issue the warranty could be void. also if your car has to go into the dealers for a engine ecu update it will wipe the remap and then the ecu will have to be reopened again and remapped. i scanned my car with Odis with the box fitted and it doesnt see it at all so happy days.

Ignore my last post..... I just realised that Shark updated their facebook page on the 3rd September and it looks like the CR140 and CR170 are now both remappable via the OBD.

Looks like it'll be a trip to Shark for me next year when the warranty runs out. :)

Can i ask waveydavey what stopped you going down the dtuk route? As i was thinking of that option myself, cheers nick.

I went the DTUK route as getting to Shark was proving to be a headache for me... I wish I had persevered now though.

The money i had set aside to pay for it was kindly spent by the mrs when her vRS needed a new caliper earlier this year. ;)

Haha mine does that regularly.

Hey gizmo have you had issues with the box?

Has anyone got any good insurance quotes? My renewal is £130 with DL without the box, and the best I've had is £430 with LV with the box fitted (no limit in bhp), and £370 with Admiral (constrained at +25% bhp).

Cheapest for me was Admiral....  I think the difference for adding the box with Admiral was around £50 or so. I've just put the car back to standard on the insurance seeing as the box never got purchased and my monthly payments have gone down by about £3-4 a month. (Approx 3 months into the policy so 9 months remaining).

Have you tried gocompare as they now have the option to put in that you have mods which then narrows down the results to those who insure modified cars. This is what i did earlier this year.

No issues with the performance, but it has hit the economy by around 10%.

I am currently trying another setting for the week (map 2 +1) and I also have the boost sensor disconnected as suggested by Andrew at DTUK.

I am with Highway (through Chris Knott Insurance) they are the performance and modified car offshoot of Liverpool Victoria and have been very good so far, chassis and braking mods are often just an admin fee to add on to the policy.

However I can't believe BHP increase is unrestricted on any policy, power increase usually has an exponential effect on policy cost.
