I think we've all done it and luckily gotten away with it.

But having known people that haven't been so lucky, wouldn't advise it. You also add to your risk apparently the longer you have a licence but not your own insurance, so you're only delaying being stung

Car was in parents name, I was a named driver... not sure why thats fraud but apparently it is? even had someone crash into me as I was pulling on the drive and insurance company paid for the repairs, even though I stated I was driving and it wasn't my vehicle in the statement

As for being stung, quotes where on average about 1500 for fire and theft and after driving for about 3 years as a named driver on parents policy the price went down to 600, as I had experience on the roads

Needless to say, once I hit 25 (and 3 points for speeding) my insurance was down to £150!

It's not fraud if it's legal,y in their name and you're a named driver! Also you can put parents on a policy in their name however you just u tick the box that says they own the car!

That's known as 'fronting' and is a form of insurance fraud. If you are discovered, your insurance will be cancelled, leading to insurance so high, you won't be able to afford it.

They're wrong as long as it is how you've described that it is perfectly legal as it is the parents car with just you as a named driver :wall:

Thats what I thought!!

See there is a difference between OWNING the car and being the registered keeper... this is where it becomes tricky! techically I owned the car because I paid for it and have the receipt, but it was registered in my Dads name because he picked it up for me and filled in the paperwork :)

It's fraud because insurance cost is risk based and if you are the main driver of that vehicle but the insurer has say your mum as the main driver, they are assessing the risk on the more experienced driver (your parent) and so you have obtained a cheaper policy by deception, thus fraud.

This ^^^^ I thought you meant it was your mums car or whatever that was predominantly used by her

so why does my insurance go down if I add my mum as a named driver on my policy?

Because in theory you'll drive the car less....

Well this is confusing now!

Don't do what I did then... Oops!

I remember having to cancel a policy because the excess was more than I put for the cost of the car! The sales person was abit taken back when I explained this and didn't have an answer besides "but you need insurance"... (I did get insurance from another company in the end)

When the person crashed into my car (I had two wheels on my drive and he left a 30 foot skid mark into the back of my car, and he burst a tyre on the kerb) the insurance company said it was my fault for not indicating AFTER paying for the repairs (even though I was 90 degrees to the road with my indicators flashing), and wanted me to pay it back... to which my reply was

"I require an a payment for alternative transport and a sum of 5000 for emotional stress caused by the incident" Funny enough I didn't hear back from them

I still think since tax and MOT are all done by the government, the insurance should be too! 1 fixed price per age bracket, no matter what car! but thats just my opinion (yeah I know theyd screw up it, but at least it'd save all the price comparison crap!)

edit: I did press enter
