1.9TDi turbo coming to end of days. What to do with it? (Oxfordshire)

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Took my 05 Fabia with what looked like an HT boot oil leak to the local garage only to be told it was a leak caused by the turbo's turbine having 9mm of play (rather than <1mm) and drawing oil from the sump and blowing it out of the breather? pipes...

With a quote of almost £800 to put it right including re-sealing the engine with no promise that with over 167k on the clock it would give me another year or two's motoring I've decided that it's not the time to throw good money after bad and although I've been told that with careful driving and keeping the oil topped up I might get 6 months out of it I think it's time to get another set of wheels.

Until this year I'd not had to spend any money on it apart from servicing costs but already this year it's had its wiring loom and power steering rack replaced, so as it seems to run fine apart from the obvious new problem, does anyone know what would be my best plan / best course of action to get the most I can for it ideally from someone who can strip it and make the most of the better bits of it?

In the meantime I'm looking at the Series 2 Fabias, although have to admit I detest the shape of them compared with my Series 1 but might also consider something in the Seat range :peek:

Ta in advance for any suggestions for either of these!

Dave.

A rebuilt standard turbo costs nothing like that much and it isn't a difficult or labour intensive job to change it.

167k means nothing if the car has been maintained properly throughout its life and most of that mileage is on motorways cruising in top gear.

Sack the garage.

If it's not a Vrs, the pd100 turbos go really cheap on eBay for low mileage ones, and it's not difficult to change.

Definitely not £800 worth.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Think I'll seek 2nd opinion on it as to diagnosis and fault just to be sure but have to admit that I'm not particularly mechanically minded so would need to farm the refitting out anyway.

One thing they did stress was that although a recon turbo can be got for about £300 (as per ebay searches) the various seals and breather pipes etc (told you I wasn't particularly mechanically minded!) would also all need to be replaced / made as new to ensure the performance of a new turbo didn't overstress the engine if various pipes etc were clogged after however many years of use and the time to do this would add most of the rest of the cost.

Any truth in this and if not, can a recon turbo really just be added to my engine with no other requirements for resealing etc?

Thanks again,

Dave.

Many have just bough a refurb turbo and fitted using existing parts with no problems at all.

Many thanks - throws a whole new light on it

I'd help out fitting it for you but you're too far away ... Not much help I know.

I'm sure if you sourced one you could find a garage to fit it for £100 or less.

Don't give up the Fabia :)

If you mean the intercooler pipes are not sealing as long as there is no splits then you can change the sealing rings for a perfect fit. Clean the pipes with a pressure washer first.
