I get to drive a lot of different cars with the traveling I do with work. With it being a similar car to the Yeti I thougt I'd give a comparative write up between the RAV4 D4D and my Yeti. I give prior warning that I am totally biased, but I'll see how it's stacks up against drive, mpg etc as I do an 800mile round trip.

Not sure many would see the Rav as a direct competitor to the Yeti. It is surely a different sector.

I haven't done the trip yet, bit hard to do a right up about a drive before you've driven!!!

2wheel drive, cross over vehicle, diesel, sits in the same class as the Quashqi, Mazda CX-5 etc, all rivals to the Yeti.

The Yeti is such a unique car it sits in a sector of its own. When the mk2 yeti comes along, not even that will be in the same sector as the Yeti. There can be only one.

If Chuck Norris drove, he would drive a yeti. Thats the sector its in, the Chuck Norris sector.

I like the old RAVs, jury is out on the current one.

Well, a couple of hours in and overall I'm not impressed so far. It goes like a train, wollows around corners, MPG is ok but nowhere near as good as the Yeti. It's well equipped but again, no better than the Yeti.

But the main issue so far is I can't find a comfortable driving position, the seats are killing my back (I had an operation on it a couple of months ago). I can comfortable drive 3hrs in the Yeti but after 2 in the RAV4 I had to stop. I'll update again when I get back home, or from hospital if my back goes!!

Not a Yeti competitior but I had a test drive in a Subaru XV Diesel last week at Stan Palmer Carlisle. Dealer experience was excellent. I just turned up on spec with no appointment and am not known to the dealership.. Mike the salesman down to earth and friendly dug a nearly new one of the forecourt, handed me the keys and sent me on my way unacompanied. The demo one was out.

 

Took a drive up to Longtown to Gretna on the A7 then back down the M6. Very shortly into the drive I was sure it was not for me (sadly). Was noisy and agricultural which I did not mind, didn't wallow too badly on corners. Reasonably speedy too. But the thing I couldn't get to grips with was the lack of seat comfort. Not the base but the back which seemed just not right. Far from it.

Computer showed 40.5mpg.

Felt a bit guilty handing the keys back having quickly made my mind up that it's not for me.

But credit to Stan Palmer for the test drive experience.

 

This was done after an appointment at Audi Carlilse where I drove the A3 150 tdi. Very much liked the car but the whole experience a much more controlled affair . Accompanied drive, on a fairly boring short route. Would need to go again before deciding. Not an unpleasant experience but they do seem to have an air of aloofness which is certainly not deserved.

The BMW120Xdrive test again unannounced in Carlisle rated much better an experience. That was the week before Christmas.

 

 

Anyway I still do not think the Rav and Yeti are comparable cars.

 

 

And yes I know the A3 and XV are not similar.

I had a RAV and didn't go for the new one as it was even bigger. I got a Tig which was smaller than my RAV. I'm now going for a Yeti which is smaller again.

The new RAV is so much bigger than the Yeti its a bit like comparing the original mini with the current one (with regard to size).

I loved my RAV but the new one is too big to park in many parking spaces.

Why not?

As much as I like the look of the RAV4 who on earth fits orange indicator lenses these days?

Without knowing the exact measurements but going on looks I would put the RAV in a class bigger.

It is about a foot longer than the Yeti, but I just don't agree with the idea that people will only consider cars when they are in a very narrow range of sizes.

Yes, some people may have definite size restrictions because of a drive or garage but for a lot it's not an issue.

What's far more common is that people have a budget they need to stick to, and some basic requirements which rule a range of cars in and out, then the actual decision is swayed by the advantages of each one.

If you have twenty something thousand to spend on a family car with a high seating position then there's Yetis and Rav4s that might be suitable so they are still competing.

I had a 2009 rav 4 it was much bigger than the yeti, I wouldn't put it in the same category.

I think the yeti out rates it in everyway, I've tried changing to different cars twice and ended up back with a yeti, I'm on my third.
