Driving Economically is very Boring

Featured Replies

Hi

After I filled up after that stupid panic buying, I thought I

Crikey - sounds like you have an economical one... I don't think many others with the 1.8T can even think about 500 miles a tank

The Fabia vRS can do 500 miles fairly easily once run in, but then, it has only got an icle tank!!!

You haven't been in the car in my current driving mode, I am accelerating like a tortoise. Also, I now know why some taxi drivers let the car labour, it does actually improve mpg (as I am spending more time watching that than were I'm going), but it doesn't sound good for the car.

I never maintain my revs below 1500rpm on mine...

If it sounds bad for the engine, then it probably is... For the sake of a few quid per tank, is it worth it? :thumbdwn:

500 !! I don't think you'll ever achieve that !!! Unless you are driving at 55mph when my re-mapped car shows 50mpg with cruise on.

I can just about squeeze 400 from a full full tank until the light comes on. Thats driving at a maximum of 70mpg with cruise on and leaving the aircon on.

On mine Ive gotten 350 miles from a fairly 'easy' tank with a couple of foot down moments and the last 'drove it like i stole it' tank has still returned 330 miles so im amazed and impressed! Beats the 165miles I got from

My vRS gets about 300-350 miles per tank in normal use. On a long run using cruise it's a bit better. When I got it remapped I got a switchable remap, so that I could revert to normal for "normal" use, only keeping the power mode for trackdays, etc. :):)

Power is addictive - it's never been back to "normal" :D:D:D

I average between 230 and 320 miles on a tank. :( I've managed 400 on a couple of occasions.

the fuel gauge moved off full after 100 miles, and hasn

No its not worth if, I agree, but its only a short term experiment, I haven't done it often anyway.

i got 455 miles out of a tank in my octy vrs (no remap yet) and that was driving 'normaly' but on average i get 360 miles per tank :o

I think the bulk of the 125 miles is probably whats being done on the fuel in the expansion 'tank' and filler neck rather than in the 1/8 to indicated on the gauge..You'll probably see it start to drop fairly sharpish to 1/2 a tank.I've just done some thing similar before the gauge moved in my Tdi. :)

I agree with that, I reckon the gauge will start diving quite rapidly as well.

The mpg of each journey has jumped from 28 to 33, doing a quick sum shows 500 miles from a tank to be impossible based on that mpg figure. My sum came to 457.38 miles, so, as the old saying goes, never aim too high, then you wont be dissappointed.

I'll aim for 450.

Thats good, what kind of roads was that based on/

My daily commute is 34 miles, made up of 10 miles of A and B roads, the rest on the motorway.

After a week of driving around like a granny, I've managed 220 miles from quarter of a tank with 440 miles still remaining in the tank (according to the trip computer).

This has been achieved by light "throttle" applications, not exceeding 3K rpm & setting the cruise to the speed limit on dual carriage ways (a 5 mile stretch of 50mph & another @ 70mph).

The past week has been very boring!!

Somehow, all this economical driving will thrown out the window on Saturday, though!!

i managed about 42 mpg the other day on a long (150 mileish) trip with a mixture of A, B, Motorway and residential roads... (driving very sedately of course). Trip computer reckons i have about 350 left... we'll see!

If I wanted an economical car I would have bought an oil burner...why have a Vrs and drive like a 'carpet slipper wearing, parcel shelf cushioning, caravan pulling, white hair adorned OAP'? Infuriates me to see some pleb in a sports car driving 20 mph below the speed limit holding up traffic.

300 to a tank normal..had it down to 220 driving 'briskly'.

Ps Yes I was late for work today because of a prime example of the above...grrrr:mad:

Just before I sold my Vrs I got 44mpg on a long and very boring drive down to cornwall..........and then got 55mpg driving normally on the journey back home.......but that was in my new 1.9 tdi Superb :D

did the old economy run with hardly any electrics on, lowest revs possible and mostly motorway driving and managed 620 miles before a desperately needed fillup, normally does 480-500 per tank:thumbup:

Had to drive like a grandad and nearly died of boredom twice

Test Drive magazine has a good article this month on maximising MPG. They took 4 petrol cars and paired them with 4 motorists.

Before and after a little tuition they managed to get:

Audi A3 2.0T Quattro - 24.5 mpg before - 45.8 mpg after

Seat Leon Cupra R - 24.4 mpg before - 42.4 mpg after

Acheived this through combination of:

Gentle acceleration

Using as high a gear as possible but changing down when labouring

Speeding up a bit before going up hills

Missing gear changes eg, 1st to 3rd to 5th

Ensuring max safe tyre pressures

Keeping engine serviced and in good condition

Leave good gap in front to minmise unecessary braking

If siting in traffic for more than 20 seconds, turn off engine

Coasting by holding in clutch with the next gear you will need selected

Limit use of AC and other electrical equipment

Reduce drag by closing windows and sunroof

Avoid adding spoilers and bodykit etc which will generally also increase drag

Based on 20 mile journey all drivers were surprised to find that using these driving techniques added very little time to their journey times.

Also using gears to slow you down instead of brakes, makes a difference if you do it properly.

Sitting behind a big A** lorry helps too if you can handle the frustration of it.

Now on half a tank after 300 miles, so maybe 500 miles is possible out of a tank, which surprises me!

  • 3 months later...

get a fabia vrs you can have a laugh and also drive economically at the same time

When I got my 1.8T in September (with about 8000 miles on it), the fuel guage seemed to drop very quickly, to the point where it looked like I was getting about 120 miles to half a tank. Bearing in mind this is not a VRS and not mapped, I thought this was bloody awful economy, as I wasn't giving it any real wellie either.

However, when I refilled, and worked out the economy, it looked ok (about 33 mpg), so I mentioned it to the dealer and they did some adjustment on the fuel tank sensor, and that immediately set things right - the guage now looks correct and gives me about 100 miles per 1/4 tank, so with a full tank, the DIS tells me I can enjoy about 425 miles.

I always tend to refill at 1/4 tank and if I've been careful I will have got about 320 miles to that, where travel is half A/B roads in moderate traffic and then 80 on the 3 lane roads.

I think I got 450 miles out of a tank when I was trying, but it was so boring!

I sold the car as it was too economical, and enjoy 13mpg in a Jeep.

Not sure I could ever "enjoy" 13mpg! Be cheaper to run a car fuelled on unicorn pee
