Problem selecting first gear...sometimes

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could answer me a question. I recently got a Skoda Fabia 2002 1.4 and I have just had a new clutch fitted in it (2 days old) the problem I seem to be having is that sometimes when I am fully stopped at traffic lights etc when I am in neutral trying to select first gear it won't go all the way in the first time. If I wait a second it then gets released and it will go fully in. I'm just wondering why this is, because like I mentioned the clutch is 2 days old. Getting into reverse or any other gear is perfectly fine, but 1st seems to have that issue. It's not frequent but it's often enough for me to wonder why it's doing it. Am I doing something wrong? This is my first car so I am new to it, but it's a problem I know I should't be having with a new clutch. Cheers.

Thank you very much, My friend was in the car again today with it occurring again. He said it seems to be that the gears are not in alignment with the clutch (Gear linkage I think he meant)  Did you get the problem fixed on your car?

Cheers Lee, could this be why it's doing this?

Well it's definitely worth checking.

My own car sometimes doesn't like going into first gear. I changed the gearbox oil but it still does it sometimes. I know my clutch and linkage adjustment is fine too. Was your gearbox oil disturbed when they did the clutch?

If you leave it in first with the clutch depressed, does it feel like the car is trying to creep forward?

If so it could the slave cylinder/ release bearing

As far as I'm aware no. It wasn't done while I was there, because the car had to be towed there since the clutch went on my journey home. It was just the clutch that they did. Dark_Hero I'm not actually sure about that either. I'm taking it out tomorrow and will give it a try and let you all know first thing tomorrow. Thanks for your help everyone. :)

Same with mine... lil' bit hard to get into 1st gear sometimes- since car was new...

Replacement of oil didn't changed nothing, too.

Am trying :-) to not bother about this.

I've always found Fords to have the best gearboxes. Fabia gearbox couldn't hold a candle to any Fords I've had. I don't like the fact that most modern cars have gone to cable linkages either. They don't give as good an action as direct rods.

Hey guys just a quick update, Since I'v been using the car to get to Sheffield each day it's currently not done it at all, it did it once while I was parked but I released the clutch and pressed it in again and it went straight in. Seems to be a very rare occurrence. The MOT is in a few weeks anyways so I'll enquire about it when that's been done. Thanks for all your help anyways :)
