Caliper carrier rubbing on disc...eeek

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Hoping somebody can help me. I had the wheel bearing/hub changed at a garage, all was fine but when it came time for me to change my discs after 100K there wasn't enough room to fit the carrier over the new disc, there was only enough space with the old disc due to the wear.

Took it back to the garage, they guessed the wrong hub was fitted and so, had to buy the proper one from a genuine VAG supplier and not motor factors; they then fitted this and my new brakes as well.

All was well for 4k and now my brakes are making the most horrendous, metal on metal grinding noise. Took the wheel off to find exactly the same problem as before, the pad shim is wedged between the caliper carrier and the disc. There just isn't enough room; the offset of the hub must be wrong again.

Pics are below but I don't know if the wrong hub has been supplied twice, by two different suppliers, 3rd party and genuine... the only constant is the garage.

What do you all think? Wrong hub or can it be wrongly/poorer fitted? Pictures attached of the gap plus a 0.025 feeler gauge inserted.

Many thanks if anyone can offer advise :)

Look behind the disc, you will see te bearing has pulled out of the hub, I can almost guarantee it.

I can't see how the hub would pull out of the bearing unless the driveshaft nut has come loose?

Just put the wheel back on but I will check this first thing tomorrow, new hub or good tighten required?

I thought if the above was true, a good tighten might pull everything back together...? But nothing seems wobbly or anything, everything feels tight but I don't know if it would.

Thanks for the input :)

It takes the driveshaft with it.

Mine did the same after a new bearing was fitted. I can't work out why tho it has come back out tho. Just odd

Thank you for these links - the video in the second thread is awesome; shows me what to look for, how they should be fitted and presumably, how the garage didn't :(

I'll whip the wheel off tomorrow and see if I can see too much of the bearing.

Many thanks for your help on this, I searched for known issues but found nowt :)

No problem. :)

This happened to me as per first link, took it to star performance and they pressed the bearing in properly, sydoggkdy - out of interest which garage are you using I'm guessing it is somewhere in Kirkcaldy? PM me if you prefer not to name publicly

Cheers

You were right - picture below shows its slipping out. My drive shaft boot is split too, I wonder if this is a coincidence.  :dull:

Yes it is somewhere in Kirkcaldy, who have done me well for 8 years and live next to my Dad and I know his son's etc so I wouldn't like to say in case I start some sort of feud but Star Performance is a good shout especially if they are happy to fit this one attached to my car properly.

Cheers.

I'm from kirkcaldy too. What you guys drive?

You can put a big socket on and hit it with a big hammer to knock it back in. This is a temp fix if anything to avoid destroying the brake discs further.

Star Performance were able to fit it in today and managed to do it properly in less than an hour.

All in all, I wish I took it there first time as it would have saved me money.

Achwell, disaster over :)

But I did speak with the original garage this morning and they did indeed, fit both bearings with a bench press and not the fancy tool. Obviously the tool is required, so something to bear in mind.

Is there not a retaining ring or C clip on these things? That they're not supposed to come out?

No c clip but a type of press is seal they have. That's the main reason the gen 2 tool is needed.
