Abs kicking in

Featured Replies

Got an issue where the abs cuts in at below 40ish mph. Have done a scan and has no fault codes.

Recently had a new bearing on the driver side front. So I removed the wheel, dropped the caliper down and eased the brake disc out the way. To me it looks like the bearing is not pressed far enough in.

What do you think?

I agree with you, take it back and insist that it be redone properly and returned with no ABS issues.

I had exactly the same problem - it rendered the car undriveable unless I took the ABS fuse out which gave me normal brakes. I got the bearing done at an independent and took it back several times and they couldn't work out what was wrong. Took it to our local VAG specialist and he found it straight away. Definitely get it back to them to sort it out

Thanks for that guys, will get it sorted tomorrow.

Had the same issue before I started using a local independent. As far as I can remember, you need a special tool to push the bearing in without breaking the abs sensor. If you try using a normal press it ****s the sensor and results in your symptoms.

Hopefully as there are no fault codes the sensor should be ok. I am quite friendly with my local vw dealer so I may be able to borrow the special tool.

What about these nice people up in/outside Dysart?

You would have to be bloody friendly to get all the tooling off them to do that lol.

Oh blimey, I had the same thing happen after having all four bearings replaced. I have never used the garage again and will never send work there again.

Here's the science bit - If the bearing's not pressed fully into the hub, the air gap on the rotor ring will be wrong, which produces incorrect readings of a locked brake.
