1.2 TSI Engine Squeal (Monte)

Featured Replies

Evening,

I wanted to seek some advice before booking my car into the dealers to get looked at. I have noticed a strange high pitch squeal coming from my engine bay when the car is idling.

It only happens when the car has been driven on the motorway and when coming off the motorway, and say sitting at traffic lights the engine ticks over at 500RPM and thats when the high pitch noise starts.

When you start engaging the engine to drive off the noise goes away, or even when sitting still and revving the engine the noise disappears then reappears at 500RPM.

I have attached some recordings I made with my iPhone, have a listen and if any of you have any recommendations I would appreciate it. It is hard to tell where it is coming from. Its in a zip format, then unzip it into a m4a.

Thanks.

Edit: Don't think the attachment worked, I have uploaded it to Mega. Thanks. https://mega.co.nz/#!0R1GyIqA!ZJTmQrqqJnxxHBbpVFJiJmc6SYW2AFqOX_0xYGcsCJA

Ticking over at 500rpm? That much be soo close to stalling?

That was my first thought

Well just above that, between 500RPM and 1000RPM.

Oh. Normal Tickover then? Or abit lower than normal?

Oh. I don't know if its normal ticker. To me it's normal tick over. It may not be normal to you, or it may be. What do you think?

I've got a different engine, so cant really comment.

Aslong as its not as low as 500rpm. 800-900rpm might be about normal.

Keep an eye on it and see it it ticks over lower than what it normally does when the noise occurs maybe?

Could it be the alternator belt slipping?

Is it a faint whistle thats at a fixed pitch? I experienced that, it was the thermostat when it opened slightly, i.e. at full working temperature, it would whistle but only at idle. After a few months and a few thousand miles it doesnt seem to be there anymore.

Thanks for the input both. Yeah it only happens when the car is really up to temperature. It's only started happening, my car has just hit 26,000 miles.

I'm driving from scotland to london next week and back, if its still there by the time I get back I'll get it booked in.

Just wanted to update this post just if anyone else had the same issues.

It was the water pump. Skoda replaced this last month under warranty and issues resolved. Took them 3 attempt mind you to diagnostic the faulty part but it was intermittent.

I'd doubt if that issue is relevant here, this is a MK2 Fabia section, the 16V 1.2TSI engines were not fitted to the MK2 Fabia, so different engine entirely.

Not entirely? itll just be an 8v head instead of a 16v head wont it? Probably a different map to account for such a thing.

Yes probably but that is like saying a Ford Escort engine is a variant of a Ford Anglia engine just because there was some design element carried across, maybe as little as the bellhousing end detail.  The current 1.2TSI engine, as well as having 16 valves, has a belt camshaft drive and the exhaust side is now at the rear etc etc - oh and the oil filter has disappeared from the top of the engine, so yes significant changes, really only roughly the same displacement.

To anyone that has experienced the noisy EVAP piping, my comments still stand as that was my only reason for pointing out it was not the same engine as the one the link was made to.
