Heated rear window not working

Featured Replies

Had a rather unfortunate experience on the way home this evening. Thanks to the inclement weather this evening my rear window fogged up, giving me cause to turn on the heated rear window for the first time.

Pressed the button, the light came on and the normal audible click was heard from the fuse box area. However - the rear screen did nothing - absolutely zero response from the actual heated elements on the rear screen overa period of some 15-20 mins.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm guessing it probably isn't the fuse as the heated rear screen button illuminated when pressed and the power click was clearly audible from the fuse box. However, I will change the fuse in the morning just in case.

Either way, disappointed this wasn't picked up as part of the approved used checks. If not the fuse, I'll have the dealer look into it when I go back to have my seat base replaced (if they ever get the part in, still waiting).

Mine doesnt click when selecting HRW. Was that click the fuse going?

The click from the fuse box happens every time you press the heated rear window button to turn it on, so again would be surprised if it was connected to a failed fuse. Should be normal, every car I've ever owned has made the same noise when engaging the (working) heated rear screen.

Don't get it?

Moving on - just pulled fuse 42 from the fuse box (heated rear window 30A fuse), doesn't look blown. Didn't have any spare 30A fuses to hand, so will hit Halfords in the morning and grab one - as much as I'm hoping it is a simple blown fuse, I am fairly sure it isn't, which suggests something more serious is at fault :(

Could be the relay playing up not switching internally?

Some relays click but can also play up.

Fair point. Any idea where the relay lives?

Going by these I'd say under or behind fuse box.

Hope that helps [emoji106]

I have never had a car make the clicking noise.  My first thought was the fuse too.  Why shuld you mess with it get it back to dealers, that's their job eve if not bought from them.  Book an apt let them sort it.

Loved the mention of the skoda joke hehehe

You and I are deaf!  and Chris clearly has bat-ears.  I tried it this morning  and eventually, after turning the radio off, and then the climate fan, and slowing down to reduce road noise, there was a faint...click!

Oh and Chris, you should Google Skoda Jokes.

Try a volt meter on window connections when switched on..for some sort of reading.

Update: Fuse changed this morning. Will likely be this evening before I have a chance to test properly whether the rear window is working or not (need to make it fog up a bit).

@Stormchaser - thanks for the exploded diagram, most helpful. Relays look like a faff to get to, so if the fuse replacement doesn't fix things I'll hand it back to the dealer to resolve. Car is due to go back in soon anyway once the dealer gets my replacement drivers seat base in, so they can tackle both jobs at the same time.

Update: Went out at lunchtime to drive to Basingstoke, rear window fogged up. Engaged the rear window and ...... nothing! It's still dead, despite the switch lighting up and the sound of the relay engaging. So, back to the dealer it will go for diagnostics and repair.

One thing I have noticed, there are two wires (one each side) with spade connectors that trail off from the left and right hand sides of the the rear window and loop into two sockets on the side of the rear window frame (this is clearly where the rear window element connects to the power. the lead on the passenger side is extremely loose (to the point that I'm not convinced it's making contact with anything inside the socket) - this might be the problem.

I'll report back once it's gone in to the dealer, which might not be for a few weeks now. Off on 2 weeks holiday on Monday morning, and when I come back I fly straight back out to Germany for a week-long conference. As I've heard nothing about my seat base (will be calling to chase tomorrow), it'll be at least three weeks before the car goes in. At least I won't be driving it and relying on the rear window to work.
