Replacing Fog / DRL Bulbs - Bumper Access

Featured Replies

Further to lots of other posts I would like to get my oar in the water. I purchased new LEDs to replace the 21W DRL bulbs beside the foglights on my 2010 Octavia Elegance TDI. I obviously looked on here for info and the consensus was that removing the plastic bumper inserts to access the hole and get the light assembly out was fraught with broken bits and hairdryers and hot water.

Being an engineer of a kind I gave the situation a good dose of looking at and I have solved it. Rather than try to give yourself a hernia and a heart attack trying not to break plastic or using hot water or SWMBO hairdryer I did the following;

  • Get a steel 12" ruler, doesn't have to be Rabone Chesterman but mine is, wrap it in a thin piece of cloth and slide it between the foglight assembly and the bumper about two thirds of the way towards the top of the light assembly.
  • When it stops because it has hit the locking catch apply slight pressure on the ruler towards the centre of the bumper and the ruler presses the catch enough for it to clear the bumper and the light assembly comes out clean.

Job Done..!

I bought the LEDs from the recommendations on here but a word of caution; there are different fittings. For my car the tangs on the bulbs need to be opposite each other not offset like the bulbs in the rear lights.

Pictures below of before and after, hope this all helps, feel free to ask questions.

Good advice!

These LED bulbs are getting better and better all of the time, but they still aren't quite as bright as the standard 21W bulbs though, however I appreciate they look much better.

In terms of real light, measured in the dark with a simple light meter, they are actually more than twice as bright and of a different light temperature. I like them and I also dislike the yellow tint of the others. I am a convert though, I have a large house and I have no normal bulbs, all of my light is provided by LEDs.
