Strange Whining noise from engine bay

Featured Replies

Hi guys, Thanks for all your contribution to this forum. I am a new Octavia mk3 owner. Car is one week old. It is making a strange low pitch whining noise since yesterday. I can hear it inside the cabin. I popped the hood open and tried to pin point the source, but no luck. Sounds like it is coming from the top of the engine. Noise gets worse when the engine warms up. I also hear fluid moving around near firewall when i start the car. It is similar to the sound which a half filled water bottle laid horizontally on floor makes when the car goes over bumps. I can also hear this intermittently when the car is on idle. I need some opinion from you guys before i take it to the dealer. As you know, they always say " This is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about ". Could someone please shed some light on this. Thank you very much for your time.

I have attached two audio files describing the whining noise on the below link(One is original and the other one has got low pass filter applied :) )

Thanks again!

Not listen to the file but fluid sound is probably some air in the heater matrix. It will come out soon, probably after a decent motorway run. At which point you'll need to top the coolant level up a little bit. Not sure on the whine.

I had a gurgling noise from my Octy but that was a faulty Fuel Pump near the rear of the car, not sure if there is a 'slave' pump under the bonnet somewhere doing the same thing?

It sounds like a TARDIS trying to land under the bonnet!

That's the weirdest thing I've heard today.  Does it change with the engine speed?

Air con pump?

Thanks for your reply guys.

Smeghead Yes it does change with engine speed. Sound is getting amplified with engine RPM. Also engine feels more clattery.

themacster, Aircon was not turned on. I turned off all the lights too. Still it makes the noise. Also sloshing in the dash gets worse. Sounds like i am in ocean. As neiln advised i'll give it a good motorway run and see if that fixes it.  I checked the coolant and engine oil. Everything looks fine. No error codes from ECU

Here is another audio clip recorded inside the cabin. Sorry about the quality.

It was the A/C compressor. Dealer is going to replace the whole compressor unit. Parts on backorder. Will update you after they fit the new one.

Shock... The parts on back order!

This is the exact same thing I have been hearing in the last couple of days when I start the car. Like the slush of water, coming from the dash?, last second or two, then no sound afterwards.

Wtf is it?

Sloshing sound in my car has come down significantly. At least It is not bad as before. I had a 2014 Superb wagon as loan car for a couple of days. It made the exact same sound. I don't know whether this is common with Skoda cars. And the droning/drumming noise from the rear was worse than my Octavia. It had more sophisticated multi link  rear. The ride was more settled though.

Low gas pressure in the air con. What you are hearing is the gas expanding in the matrix behind the dash. The noise is an indication of a problem.

I have driven the car for three weeks since they fixed the a/c compressor. Whining sound didn't come back. Water sound in the dashboard is still there. Will ask the dealer about that next week. Cheers!
