HI all. I'm new to the forum here. Im looking to buy a Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TFSI. I am wanting advice of all you Mk2 Octavia VRS 2.0t fsi owners. What are the common faults I should look out for when buying one? What is it like on fuel cost wise? What's reliability like generally and on the turbo? Thanks in advance.

Cant offer much advise but I bought mine 3mths ago and love it, its a fl 2010 fsi manual it does about 33mpg average with all types of driving, fsi vrs cheaper to tax and insure than tfsi

It depends how heavy your right foot is, mines quite heavy (damn my big feet!) an I'm lucky to see 25mpg apart from on the motorway where I can get 30-35mpg. Therefore a tank is lasting me about 200-250 miles :notme:

Thanks for the info. I think the 2010 fsi would be beyond my budget. Im looking towards a 2007 2008 2.0 tfsi VRS, about 60k to 70k on clock.... how much should I be paying for one?

Aside from the usual cambelt changes and good servicing, check oil level as they do like a drop, change cam follower every 30k minimum, clean oil pickup as often as you can, intake valves prone to carbon build up due to direct injection, variable runner on intake manifold can sometimes fail. turbos etc are relatively sturdy, engine itself in my opinion is a peach! Mine returns 29-31mpg in varied driving, and I absolutely love it. The petrol engine is the pick of the 2 pfl vrs engines.

Thanks for the information guys. I have been looking for a sporty powerful petrol car and my search narrowed me down to the Octavia vrs 2.0t. Previously had 56 reg VW Golf Gt Tdi 170 and what a nightmare of a car due to the DPF issues. I'm assuming that the Skoda Octavia diesel vrs engines have the same issues with the DPF. Am I right guys?

You are correct. PD170 engines in both the Golf and Octavia share the same DPF system.

That's what made me want the petrol engine. When you have owned a PD 170 engine.. Only then do you realise how problematic the DPF actually is. Its a nightmare. I hope when I have bought a VRS 2.0T FSI it will give me trouble free driving without having to go on the motorway every couple of days!!

Have you tried doing a search in the octy mk2 section as there's numerous threads there on the subject, which will cover just about everything there is to look for so you don't miss anything by just relying on your own thread.

Have seen a 2006 Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TFSI. Only thing I'm worried about is the cambelt hasn't been changed and its done 67k on the clock. Does anyone know what the cost of changing the cambelt is on one of these and would it be Ok that the cambelt hasn't been changed at 67k?

Although not the end of the world it begs the question have the previous owner(s) looked after it properly. I personally would want to see a stamped service book and reciepts to prove the lack of a cambelt change is the only thing that's been missed. Skoda charge £359 without the water pump. Its more expensive than an indy but you get a 2 year guarantee.

normal VAG periods tend to be 4 years or 80000 which ever comes 1st. There's been a slight shift in those numbers lately but youe prospective purchase should have had 1 done by now.

Well the car is one owner from new and it had full skoda service history. He claims it doesn't need to be changed as Skoda advised him that it doesn't need changing.

no worries, let us know what they say. All the other vag cambelts have the same sort of maximum milage/minimum years give or take a bit so it would be surprising if the tfsi was any different. He might have heard the x miles bit but not the 'or y years which ever comes first' bit!

Hi. Just rang Skoda and he confirmed the cambelt is supposed to be changed within 4 years or before 60k miles but it is possible if Skoda has checked the timing belt wear and its been advised by the them it doesn't need changing then its fine.

I wouldn't accept that response for a second. One of three scenarios could play out here:

 

1) 'Sir, we have no record of that confirmation and it has not been documented or written. Therefore you buy the new engine to replace the one that has just died due to cam belt failure.'

 

2) 'It was okay when we checked; must be a fault with how you have driven it. Therefore you buy the new engine to replace the one that has just died due to cam belt failure.'

 

3) They check it and tell you to change it.............................

 

I would change at the recommended interval; do not risk an engine for the sake of a belt change.

True. If I did end up buying the car tge timing belt would be the first thing I'd get done anyway. As you say its not worth risking the engine for a timing belt!

All the services for the car have been carried out by Autohaus Northampton and progress Skoda in Bedford. Are they decent garages? and are they classed as approved Skoda dealers?

I bought my original vRS TDi from Autohaus in Northampton in July 2008 and were very happy with their service.  However, they closed down sometime in 2009 and until Progress opened up their dealership in Northampton, where I now go, took my car to their branch in Bedford for service and the odd bit of warranty work.

 

I'm not sure when Progress became Skoda dealers, but they now have three dealerships, Letchworth, Bedford and Northampton and I have found their service to be absolutely fine.

Thank you for your reply. I'm just worried about the oil consumption on the petrol 2.0 TFSI engines from what I've read on the forum. I asked the owner and he said it needed topping up every 5k miles about a cup full. Can anyone tell me from their experience? Also im off to look at the car tomorrow any tips on what to look out for. 56 Skoda octavia vrs 2.0t. 67k FSH.

A cupful every 5000 miles seems very optimistic from: (A.) Reading threads, (B.) Personal experience.

 

My 06 vRS TFSI consumes oil as following:

 

- Round town / city / urban driving = about 1L per 800 miles

 

- Long distance runs (i.e motorways etc) = about 1L per 1200-1500 miles

 

Why the difference? Not a clue; but I have measured this, and the trend is always the same.

Hmmm. Interesting. Only thing is I'm going to be driving more locally than on the motorway.
