2003 1.9tdi engine damper..

Featured Replies

Hi..

Just broken my 3rd engine damper bracket (atop the steering pump) in 12 months.. The second time I had the AC compressor replaced as I was told it was probably the AC pulley.

Its just gone again, could the alternator be at fault here? It seems to be working ok, but could the pulley be a fault this time?

Is there any other component that can cause this? Everything seems to be working ok so far..

The alternator pulley does have a sprague clutch in it. It could cause more vibration if that's failed such that it never slips.

I'm with Ken on this.  The cause of this is most likely to be the alternator pulley.

It can be changed in situ, but I found it easier to remove the alternator when mine sheared off (which involves removing the PAS pump, tensioner, and one of the rad fans).

Cheers..

I removed the damper and its broken bracket for now, and to be honest, the motor is running a lot smoother so I'll leave the alternator pulley fix until I have the time to replace it.

I take it I have to remove the alternator to swap pulleys over, or can that be done in situ?

The pulley can be changed in situ in principle but the lock nut is often :swear: :swear: tight.
