Servicing

Featured Replies

My car is coming up for a year old and I have been thinking time to book a service. However looking at the service manual it is suggesting that my car is on a QI6 variable service interval and does not require a service until 2 years old or past 30,000 miles. Is this right?

All capable cars leave set to variable servicing. If you want it on fixed book it in at 10k/12 months and get it switched to fixed. This has been the case since at least 2000.

Personally unless your doing galactic mileage I would switched to fixed intervals.

As above variable servicing is more suited to those who do in excess of 10k per year, mostly on motorways. If you're doing 10k or less fixed servicing is the better option IMO. The variable service is the same cost as a fixed major one (done every 2 years) while the minor service (done on the odd numbered years) will cost £139. Unless things have changed on the mk3 (which I don't think they have) variable will be a maximum of every 2 years or 20k, but this is determined via sensors and uses things like your driving style, types of journeys and number of starts. Usually this ends up being less than 20k, so you don't end up saving much in reality and is more to do with pleasing fleet managers to keep their cars on the road, rather than save private owners money. I'd rather have the oil changed each year than be on variable, but that's a decision for each owner to make.

On variable the service will come up from between 9300 miles and 18600 miles or upto two years.

I'm on the 3 year free servicing plan from the 0% PCP offer, and was under the impression that servicing was every year. However the stamp in the service book is showing QI6 which is the variable servicing plan. I only do around 8,000 miles a year, so I guess I should ring Skoda and see what they suggest?

On my vRS, I press the CAR button on my amundsen, then press Setup, then press Service, it tells me when the next service and oil change is. 425 days/ 12800 miles from now. I too am QI6.

Which means if you stay on variable you will only get 1 service!

I thought if you had the 3 year servicing they were supposed to set them to fixed intervals?

They seem to only set them to fixed interval at the first service.

Thanks for that, I've done what you suggested and it says next inspection 11600 miles or 393 days, so question answered.

I guess it will mean just the one service then by the time the PCP comes to an end.

Would be keen to get confirmation from other 2.0tdi owners that they are on variable service plan as me?

Have just found the service agreement and it does provide for an annual free service so I may as well book it in.

I would suggest you contact your dealer/vw finance as you suggest because if you are on the fixed service plan and you don't take it in when you should vw finance may not pay for the service. I remember one of tne guys with a blackline doing just that and he had quite a fight to get them to pay-he managed it in the end but worth checking out which service plan vw finance are paying for to save any agro. It may well be that the dealer has forgot to change your service indicator on your car from the factory set variable to fixed, which was a common upcock when I got mine.

Thanks for that, I'll check when I book the service. The service agreement seems pretty clear about providing three free annual services, and as you say it may be the variable service is the default setting from the factory.

You're welcome. From what you say it'll be the standard service deal they have offered on numerous models at different stages for some time on various finance deals. It's usually 2 minors at years 1 &3 (or 10,000/30,000miles) plus the major at year 2 or 20,000 which ever comes first, which then over rides the factory set variable service settings. It's a nice sweetener for those that get it!

If you are on free servicing, dealer should have reset to fixed interval at pdi, I've now used all my 3 free services, 10k, 20k and 30k and now switched to variable service plan to take me through the next 3 services, so should take me through to over 85k, then the plan is to place an order for a Superb III shortly after that and hope it shows up before I have to pay a lump sum for the next service!

Which means if you stay on variable you will only get 1 service!

I have the free servicing, and mines just started warning me that I need an oil change in 500 miles, but I'm on just over 8800.

I know the European service intervals are 15000km which equates to 9300 miles, but was there ever a definitive answer on UK intervals? The free servicing offer definitely says it's 10000 miles, but the car thinks otherwise.

My dealer said to ignore the computer and wait for 10k or 12 months whichever comes first.

Ta. I'm going to miss 9300 anyway as I've got two long trips to do next week.

That's what i've done with mine.
