Polo 6N2 Track Car Project - now scrapped :(

Featured Replies

I've just brought the missus a new car, so her old car has come to me as a toy to tinker with given its worth nothing unfortunately, my idea is to turn it into a track car for next year,

It's a 1.4 8v with a mighty 60bhp but given it's the E version it's pretty light already no electric windows or central locking or anything :) it's a tad over 900kg to start, and I'm sure it would be a right laugh with abit of weight saving and power hike,

The beast in question

I've got a list of things I want so do mainly suspension and brakes and weight saving to start, going to wait till the engine blows before I get a 1.6 16v in there :)

Interesting! I had a 6n2 GTI, and while not fantastically fast, it was great fun (the most fun car I've owned I'd say [given I've not yet 'driven' my E30]), esp. with some 4 pots up front - made for some tail happy cornering :)

It might be worth looking at RARBs - the Golf mk2 items fit with some different hangers/brackets IIRC.

I've seen that some mk2 stuff is interchangeable like the rear beam for disc conversion, cheers for the info

This should be a great project.

Do they share the same platform as the mk3 Ibiza?

I'm sure they had a 1.8turbo version?

Could be a giggle

I like your thinking, Trev, would it be possible to fit an ABF in there?   Be a rocket then

Lots of it's been done yes, I read at least one abf and lots of various 1.8t, but tbh when I can get a 1.6gti engine all ancillaries and wiring etc for 300notes it's not really worth it going much more :), I reckon a lightly tuned 1.6 would easily make 140 with a cam and exhaust/intake mods and circa less then 800kg will be pretty good :)

nice and light and a lively engine, sounds like a great combination, get your finger out mate, I want to see this on track next year, How Fast maybe in Bedford?

Bit of a no brainer then :)

Good luck with the conversion :)

got two weeks off over Christmas so should get some good progress in :), going to get the brakes and suspension done within next few weeks I hope, just going to get new front wheel bearings while I've got the hubs sitting here for the brake upgrade, then I might as well do things like bottom balljoint/droplinks wishbone bushes if there shot, then need to get some discs and pads, sort out some brake lines, new top mounts, not too much of a list haha

Woo brakes arrived pretty quick, stripped them down and gave them a quick clean greased the sliders as they were bone dry, the nipples are nice and free and the pistons move nice and freely too which is a result for a eBay buy for £60 well chuffed,

Even the powdercoating is in pretty good nick for 13year old calipers, going to leave them red

Just going to press in new wheel bearings at some point, get some brake lines from vw if they do them still, and decide what pads/discs to run :)

Looking good Trev, I got myself some EBC discs from Larkspeed, strangely they were cheaper with free delivery from Larkspeed, EBC wanted £20 more and charged for delivery, how does that work?

Pads, as your car is light Yellow stuff or DS2500's will probably be good.

Now the stoppers are sorted, when are we  getting to the power bit?   :peek:

Want to see how light I can get her first :), and sort the suspension too,

Discs and pads have been ordered, just trying to sort out some brake lines as don't really want Oem, but braided ones only seem to come as four, when I just need the two for the min, Gone for yellow stuff pads and just an Oem equivalent disc should be more then enough :), should hopefully get cracking next weekend if everything goes to plan

I called HEL, told them what callipers and what car I had and they made some pipes for me, service was good and the price was not too bad.

Didn't you order from HEL for your Bora iirc?

Yeah I did bud, but on the website it has the option for just front two for golf etc but not for the polo for some reason,

Just had her cleaned for the first time in a year and a half lol, did oil and filter and gearbox oil yesterday, and got the 14"se wheels on ready for when the brakes go on :)

Suspension should be here early next week, got some weitec coilovers, just going to drop the subframe fit a manual steering rack, get some new brake lines, then should be ready to rebuild the front :)

Looks good :) I loved driving mine when I had the seats/carpet out (drying it after the rear washer leaked and drowned the interior). You can hear so much more of the road, and the empty-car feeling was great.

I've got a GTI ECU sitting here if you want it. I bought it to replace mine, thinking it had failed (was a wiring issue), so never used it (purchased in good faith).

Cover postage/collect, and it's yours. (I assume I can post this, I'm not making money?)

Funny enough enough I'm in talks with a guy about his 1.6gti engine and box etc at the min, that includes ecu etc, however I shall keep you in mind if I do so happen to need another one cheers
