Skoda Gearboxes

Featured Replies

Hmmm. I had a worrying moment when my gearbox started to get really stiff when going into and out of fifth gear the other day.. and NO, I HAD NOT been changing my headlight bulbs. :D

After a while I realised it was nothing to worry about, and I reckon it was just the fact I'd been driving a brand new Saab (with a superb gearbox) and mine must just have felt different in comparison. Since I've had a break from driving the Saab, my gearbox has felt ok. I thought the same with the clutch too - The Sabb's was twice as easy to depress and when I got back in my furby I thought the clutch was about to break! It's funny what effect driving a strange car for a bit has on your views of your own machine...

Luckily, no noise from from mine yet, apart from when I declutch too soon when trying to accelerate quick [graaauuunch!, oh ****!]

Sometimes Jason, I can't get the car into gear at times. First gear seems locked. I can however put it into second, then first or get it into first by taking foot off clutch then back onto cluch and into first. Has happened a few times, with 1st, 3rd and 4th gears, although has eased greatly with miles.

anyone still in this thead.

anyone had experience of the gearboxes on the 1.6? I came out of work to

find a pool of oil on floor. Its not been hit, or grounded. its 1998 t reg

with 36k on it.

I cant see under where its coming from due to bad back.

I can select gears and car moves. but didnt drive more than 10 yards.

Are you sure the oil is from the gearbox? I have had a number of major oil leaks involving cars I have owned, the worst being from the front crankshaft seal of an Audi 100.

 Hehe! And now I'm the owner of the aforementioned Fabia with the gearbox issue that kicked it all off! Have to say the replacement box is still going well under the extra pressure being applied to it!

A friend of mine has a 1.6 golf SE (T reg) and has recently had a small pool of oil under the car when parked on his drive. His car has covered 61k miles and was still drivable (for how long?) with the leak.

The oil was dripping from the bell housing between thw engine and the gearbox.

It turned out to be a crack in the gearbox casing due to internal failure of the diff within the box.

Garage who replaced the gearbaox said it was quite common for these gearboxes to fail and he has had to pay for a new gearbox to be fitted.

I suspect yours has the same box code.

Hope this helps

So, if I was going to change the gearbox oil, say every 30k in my Fabia SDi... what oil is suitable?

I've changed the gearbox oil in my Rover 220 Sdi... special stuff MTF94 I think.. Is the Fabia's gearbox oil as finiky as it's engine oil?

Thanks.

Can anyone tell me where the gearbox oil filler and drain plugs are for an Octavia 1.6 2000? The gear box has been playing up with it poping out of gear and making an horrendous grating noise when both in gear and neutral.

Would like to change the oil before spending 500+getting the box replaced!

Any advice on changing the oil would be gratefully received.

My word, this thread was kicked off over 3 years ago. :D

Sorry, can't help on the gearbox oil thing. :o

if its jumping out of gear when you've put it fully in gear ,i would say that the synchro/selector fork on the gear selected is worn or the detent is faulty on the gear selector mechanism , as for the noise this could be a bearing collapsing which may also be contributing to the gear jumping out problem , IMO I don't think an oil change will cure it , but if you drain the oil into a suitable container you will be able to inspect it for metalic bits , a sure sign the gearbox is U/S

I just had a gear box change at 40,000 because the buggered one was making the 4th gear shake like crazy when engaged up to 2700 revs. Now the new gear box is in its not a problem and running really nicely and much quieter.

Guess I was being a bit optimistic hoping it would just be the oil! I have found some sort of leak, although not sure whether it's from engine or gearbox.

Have been quoted 490 to supply and fit re-con box with 2yr warranty.

Is it worth getting the clutch changed at the same time as getting the gearbox fitted?

Forgot that it was actually my car that had the dodgy box that kicked off this thread all those years ago. Although now the box is sat in a garage with no immediate future.... I guess this means if the box was fitted at 28,000 miles, the box is only 35k miles old, not 63k miles.

Now have a totally different gearbox in the mongrel.

right just to clarify an answer to the original post.....

the fabia's use a vw type 02T transmission which is kind of unique the the fabia/9n polo/Ibiza....

the golf diesel have either a 02K or 02J Transmission unit depending on spec, although they are vey similar and they share many internal components they aren't the same gearboxes.

according to the previous owner of my 2.0 fabia he says that the gearbox was noisy from the day it left the factory and skoda didn't want to know

Do you happen to know if the gearboxes need any specific type of oil?

Thanks.

Phil.

yeah! gearbox oil.........

to be honest mate, we're talking about a vw box here and they are normally bulletproof little bu**ers, you could probably stick ribena in there ans it would still work!
