I'm sure this has been brought up a million times but with these guys claiming 180bhp and a hefty torque increase. Can i expect things under the bonnet to go pop? presuming the clutch wont last long. any other issues? also who makes uprated clutches? just want to know how much hassle im going to get from re-mapping and if the engines gonna blow up!!! I'm in no doubt that the grin will be very large, especially as i currently have a 1.6 focus!!!!!!! I know alot of you furbie VRS guys have re-mapped so there cant to much goin wrong!

180BHP and a big torque curve on the vRS shouldnt be a problem, the first thing to go is usually the clutch, everything else should hang together without problems. Remaps tend to still be within the limits of the engine. As with any performance mod engine life maybe affected due to the extra stress on the components, but I would say only marginally.

Defo - clutch will be toast pretty sharpishly, custom code is pretty much the only one that's 'flattened' enough to stay within safe-ish limits, most others have a MASSIVE spike at 1900ish rpm which will smoke your clutch.

I know someone who has delt with angel tuning and only had good things to say.... the map is (AFAIK) not as custom as say a jabba one...its sort fo like a superchip style mod..but better like a half way house....however i hear they do spcialise in diesel cars the owner i forget his name is ment to be a real diesel nut and loves to do the skoda diesels

The dealer will know it's remapped as soon as they drive it so best check with them regarding warranty as every dealer is different regarding modifications and warranty.

If it is an off the shelf remap, like that of superchips or upsolute, then you should only be looking at 25-30bhp. The only way to get the type of gains you mentioned (50+bhp) is to have a custom code as some have mentioned.

Talking to revo i got the following when they replyed to my 'is it detectable' question

Hi Robin,

software is undetectable to current VAG diagnostic equipment. However if it's in performance mode you can actually datalog requested values and will be able to see it's not standard. No ID or errors appear.

Custom code told me that its not east to detect, and dealers generaly cant find it ( if the dealer map is loaded). Also dealers get a lot of money from warrenty work so some can be helpful.

Still, i cant make up my mind as to which way to go as they both offer 170ish BHP and are similarly prices. One difference is that the custom code people offer stage 2 and 3 upgrades where revo dont on the deisel engine. Revo also only offer sps1 on the deisel.

Picture the scene.... you crash into a a tree, spin the car hit a passing child, police take your car away to examine and find you've remapped the ECU. You're now uninsured and unable the person you injure files for personal injury. Because you're not insured they claim against you.

So, you've been probably been arrested for dangerous driving, driving without insurance and maybe some other traffic offences - you're also being taken to court for someone's personal injury claim.

Alternatively you could crash into someones house, they could sue you for repairing the house.

the only reason i was even considering not declaring it was that the people at angel tuning told me it was totally undetectably in the event of an insurance claim! obv this is not the case so will have to see what ins loading there is for a re map. Might just go with a pd160 intake and filter and be happy!!!(for now at least!)

Even when it's not detectable theoretically, it's still a change that alters the car's bhp so you'd still have to declare it. Sux, true, but as per above it's just the right thing to do.

I've got a load of stuff going into my loft rather than onto my car because of this, until my insurance is due for renewal. Annoying but true

I used to be in the motor trade and worked for one of the biggest salvage companys in the UK.

One of the many tasks i had to do was escort insurance company assessors to our secure lock-up to inspect the car.

I did this many times in excess of 50!

In all the times i did this they did not give the car a detailed examination!

All they did in the 10 mins they were there was take down the VIN/REG numbers, take measurments of the tyre tread on each tyre and write down what is damaged.

One accessor had to look at a old Sierra Cossie

This car had the rear burntout, a real shame as the front had real mint paintwork.

I popped the bonnet for him to take down the VIN number, i could see as soon as i popped the bonnet it had a massive turbo, huge bored downpipe, the remains of an induction kit, the pipework was there but the filter was not.

The accessor took the numbers down and said 'Yep looks all standard to me' :eek:

I did'nt say anything incase the claim did'nt go through but was amazed he did'nt spot this!

I left this company in 2002 so things may have changed now.

I think Angel tuning is owned by the guy who owns (just found out used to own) the fiat bravo guide, i think they specialise in italian cars, i came quite close to buying his old bravo hgt off him, nice guy, called Nige email [email protected] and ask him your questions. I'm quite sure that the company was started off on the back of a website not to disimilar to this one. Nice community etc!!!

I have no issues telling the insurance company, thats not what concerns me.

I would be more interested in hiding it so warrenty work can be done without them claiming that its the MODs that have caused it, which it could be, but most likely not.
