Front assist, is it worth it?

Featured Replies

and ACC is pretty pointless if you have a manual gearbox like me...

I have a manual gearbox and ACC on my Golf R and find it great (also used it in a DSG).

On open roads / motorways its great to follow traffic. I find the car can pull nicely between 30-80mph in 6th so I don't need to change gear anyway.

One thing you can do though is change gear while ACC is still activated. So occasionally if the traffic slows right down, I block from 6th to 3/4th and then back to 6th when the flow speeds up again. No need to deactivate ACC or touch the controls :)

Point taken... I haven't used it enough to explore downshifting whilst ACC set. Have to give it a  go next longish journey I do.

I do think ACC sits a bit better with the DSG box though as you can just leave it to do its thing all the way from motorway speeds down to stationary if there's a traffic jam...

Is there a (safe!) way to test that it's working? I've turned it on, and tried slowly driving into the neighbour's car a couple of times but nothing happened...except I hit the brakes at (what I thought) was the last minute..

Edit to add - this is on an Elegance delivered this week. It has the little box on the front bumper, and it looks like I can turn it on and off...but was it a standard fit when I ordered it back in July, or has it just been added as standard in the new October brochure?

My Volvo stealer had a big piece of foam with bricks printed on it, they put it in the car park and get you to drive at it...oh my word its a very very strange experience, worked like some sort of black magic.

Its not on my vRS Combi as its a ghost order so already spec decided.

I think it doesn't operate below 5mph. Safest way to test it would be with a big empty cardboard box!

and if its working, it works very well.

As someone previously said, it is something you think you will never need, but trust me, you are very very grateful when it saves you. It applies the brakes very quickly. Probably quicker than you can.

Found this video about ACC on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9-koVe53kE

On a VW Passat but the video is listed as dated Dec 2012 so maybe the same system as on the Skoda now ?. This shows as ACC going from Autobahn 120kph to stationary behind a car without any changes to the ACC. Looks like a definate tick box on my order form

There is also a video on Front Assist:

The FA comes as standard on the Elegance now.

OK, seems like this is the go...I might have it and it should work... right?

Piccies tomorrow....if I can't find a suitable cardboard box, the neighbour's Aston is a scrapper....

OK, seems I was wrong...don't have it and it didn't work...

neighbour was none too impressed...
