Instrument cluster leaning to the left

Featured Replies

So I picked up my new vRS TSI DSG hatchback (RHD) on Thursday. All-in-all I'm very happy with it indeed! I will post photos and a review when I get a bit of time.

One slightly odd thing I noticed is that the entire instrument cluster (tachometer, maxidot & speedo) seems to be a few degrees off horizontal with the speedo being higher than the revcounter. This is most noticeable if looking at the vertical sides of the maxidot screen which rather than being aligned vertically, are leaning to the left.

Is this how they all are or is it just mine? I imagine they all must be the same, but I can't imagine why they would be angled in this way.

If this is by design, I imagine the LHD models would be leaning in the other direction.

Can anyone shed any light or at least confirm that theirs is aligned in the same way?

Are you sure you aren't parked on a slope?

Seriously though mines completely level. Are you sure the light isn't hitting one of the beveled sides of the maxidot so giving the illusion of it looking wonky?

Is it April 1st today?

Seriously, it should be dead level (unless you have a puncture of course)

Do you think that it could be due to the curvature of the Earth, is every 3 miles east or west 1 degree of curvature

Maybe the car was destined for Nigel Farage and was planning to try and convert him  :p

I can't see a lean on the above image

It is admittedly only slight. Having looked at another I think they're all the same.

I had the same on my mkii vrs (it leaned to the left.)  I was going to complain about it but got used to it in the end and traded it for another after 18 months which was straight!

Still looks like it leans to me. But then so does the photo that Smeghead posted (leaning to the right).

I guess I'll have to get used to it...

Certainly looks like a leans to me as well. Quite obvious if you look at the maxidot

Does it lean, or is it perspective trickery, being mounted vertically in a dash that is sloping away towards the side of the car, and maybe also towards/away from the driver as well?

Might look twice at my maxidot tonight.

Maybe dash is not leveled ok, as you have on left and right side screws that are holding it. And car is new so I would go to dealler and complain on that, you have right for that as customer.

Just held a ruler against the screen and although there is about 1/16" difference top to bottom on the maxidot, it could be the angle of the camera or possibly adjustable by loosening, twisting and retightening the fixing screws.

After a 12 week battle to get the instrument panel levelled, today it was finally sorted out and I am absolutely delighted by the result!

Every time I sat in the car, it was irritating me, so I took it in to my local dealership in Basingstoke and after some time looking at it, they acknowledged that the instrument cluster was not level and arranged an appointment to get it straightened. But after leaving it with them for a day (during the week at considerable inconvenience), they told me that when they'd compared it with another vrs, they found it was the same and so they did nothing about it. Very frustrating. So I contacted Skoda UK and sent them a photo with grid overlay which clearly demonstrates the issue.

See here: https://db.tt/cZRArnWp

Maxine from Skoda UK arranged for me to take the car back into City Skoda, Basingstoke for it to be "compared with another vrs" one again but I explained that I had lost faith in them and that I'd prefer to see another dealership. So they arranged for me to take the car to Ridgeway Skoda in Reading. The first 2 people that saw the car did not acknowledge the fault, and I was told that if they adjusted it "it might throw it out somewhere else". Not very confidence inspiring! But then service advisor Andy Bridgewater did acknowledge the fault, got it booked in and today (to my considerable surprise) it was fixed!

The car is now how it should have been when I picked it up 3 months ago, but I am just delighted it has been sorted and that my persistence finally paid off.

Result, that would have annoyed the hell out of me

Great result. Did the garage say what they did to fix it?

I would of been the same!!! how have they fixed it ?

They just said they had taken the dash apart and adjusted it. It can't have taken them very long as I got a call to say it was finished just a couple of hours after I dropped it off.

The photo with the grid overlay was a really good way of proving your point. Well done in persevering with getting it fixed.

You're right, it was the overlay what done it. It wasn't until I showed the guys at Reading the picture with the overlay on my phone that they acknowledged the issue.

Finally - I found one having had the same problems. I got my new Octavia (model 2016) 2 weeks ago. My Skoda dealer can not see the problem.

I have been inspecting all his new Octavia cars in the showroom. Two 2016 models, and one 2015 model. All of them showed the same problem with the instrument cluster leaning.

I understand that Ridgeway Skoda in Reading solved the problems within a couple of hours.

What exactly was done? I would really like to handle over the secret to my own dealer here in Denmark.

I don't have any more info for you Adane.

They just said they had taken the dash apart and adjusted it. I would recommend getting in touch with Skoda in Reading.

If they fob you off I can email them.

Good luck. It can be very frustrating!

My name is Wooldridge, if you want to give them a reference to check their records.

Thanks for responding. I have made contact to Mr. Bridgewater at Skoda in Reading. His technician remembers very well the cluster issue, and how it was fixed.

I will now try to make my dealership here in Denmark understand what to do. Really hope he does.

mine is goes into the garage next week to have the instrument cluster looked as well, there is no lean but there is what looks like a smudge on the inside of the instrument cluster or some sort of defect in the plastic and its driving me mad!
