Octavia front brake discs and pads

Featured Replies

Have just had 2004 Octavia TDi Estate in for 20,000 service and found it needed new front brake discs and pads at a cost of

The font discs on my Octavia lasted until 70,000 miles. It started it's 3rd set of pads at that point too.

Did you ask to see the old discs and pads? Dare I say it, but did you or your partner take the car to the garage?

Good advice from Goochie, ask to be shown the removed items.

They should also have called you to confirm that you wanted the work carried out prior to them starting.

Oil Burners do tend to be heavy on front brakes as the engines are quite weighty but 20k is pretty early.

Mmm - that timescale is more in line with what I was expecting re discs. There had been some judder so thought maybe pads but surprised at discs.

Husband took the car in and authorised work over the phone on the basis that he wanted to see the old discs and pads before he would pay up and garage is main Skoda dealer so hopefully garage not pulling a fast one - but you never know !

We'll just have to be really gentle with these new discs and pads and keep our fingers crossed I guess.

just had mine changed at 24k. its on an 02 plate 1.9 tdi

must say i thought it was a bit soon but he shown me and they were worn.

Had mine replaced at 52,000 miles and they took heavy punishment, 20k seems rediculously early unless there was an underlying problem with them but I cant think what.

If there is judder then the brake discs are warped and need changing (if you want the judder to stop).

Discs quite often build up alot of corrosion on the rear face next to the heat shield and get changed due to that rather than wear. Excessive corrosion is an MOT failure if considered bad enough.

I would be very concerned at getting only 20,000 miles out of a set of front discs! Driving style is a big factor in brake wear, of course, but 20,000 miles????? I've just done a first change of front discs and pads on a 2003 130PD estate at 47,500 miles. The discs were still marginally over 23mm (25mm new), and all but one pad had plenty of wear left! The 'rogue' pad was the inner LHS which had worn down such that the outer 'ridge' formed on the disc had worn right through the sensing wires (hence the brake wear light had come on).

1.9 tdi pd 130 on 84k and still the original pads and discs , skoda dealer at april service time said they were fine . What am i doing wrong

I got 40k from the 288mm setup at the front and there was plenty of meat left on the pads/discs when I changed to 312mm.

20k seems very early to me.

When they say they need doing always ask what their thickness is and what the minimum thickness is. (IIRC it's 25mm new 23mm worn out on the 288mm discs)

my octavia vrs is still on its original discs front & rear @ 108k! however rears will need replacing at next service,i replaced at the weekend a friends front discs on her 2005 pug 206cc (covered only 15k!) due to inner face being heavily corroded, outside face of disc looked like brand new! maybe yours were corroded due to low miles covered? :)

I wonder if, 3 YEARS after the original post she has managed to sort this out yer? (Irony :) )

I would go with safety first and change them if they need doing it's not worth risking lives for the sake of a new set. BUT...

Discs should last at least a few years depending on what mileage you cover but also depending on how you drive. You might think you drive carefully but your driving style could cause excessive wear. Also the general condition of the brakes, suspension and tyres and whether the car sits for long periods at a time could cause pitting and corrosion.

Please tell me you didn't goto a Kwik Fit or similar tyre, clutch, brakes place? they will tell you anything to get your lovely money. Even some main dealers will rip you off so be careful. Always goto a mechanic you trust or independent engineer. If you have gone to a Kwik Fit or similar always ask to take the old discs and pads with you. If they refuse to let you have them - you know they have just done you! Tell them you are their mystery shopper or something and are taking them away to the main dealer to confirm they needed replacing. You just watch them squirm.

Doh!

I'd guess they may need changd sue to corrosion, certainly a possibility after 4 years with low mileage.

Just changed the original discs and pads (albeit the second set) at 56k. Mind you, its a hard working tdi estate, so i aint to unhappy with that.

Mintex discs & pads came to

I took my std disks off after 2 year and 25-30k and they are in pritty good nick, I changed them cos the original pads were wearing them badly, if you ran ur finger down the disc it was ribbed and it wasnt wearing at all in one spot in the middle of the disc face like it was scoring it, so I put some grooved discs on that sorted it out and cleaned the pads up, I have now done 50 n a bit K and the cheap discs are now badly worn but the pads still look fairly new, (I am changin them all next week so ill put pics up) desided to go for EBC? Discs and some black diamond fast road pads,

must admit the std discs had a ring of about 1/4" from the edge of the disc that wasnt worn just rusty, bit wiered?
