Plates are a non endorsable offence anyway, I got pulled on my GSXR about a month ago over the runcorn widnes bridge, I was behaving myself, under the speed limit, legal exhaust etc. Plod got out his plastic ruler and measured my plate, the spacing between the lettering and the hight of the letters, then wrote me a nice

You probably won't get pulled, but it's a really ch*vvy thing to do IMHO and it will give people preconceptions about you and the way they expect you to drive. :thumbdwn:

And you could get fined - there are crackdowns planned over quite a lot of the country and there has been talk of a hotline being put in place - rightly so.

You're obviously going to do it and I wish you all the best but if you get done it's a fair one.

anything can be [email protected] it doesnt matter because your not a ch@v lol :)

Yep don't come to Scotland either, they love pulling you and will instantly fine you, no rectification notice any more as they have had enough of people saying that if you get caught you just have to change it! I had a collegue fined for the exact same thing as you, and my cousin was done for it too in recent weeks.

I have seen a few dodgy ones, which are far worse however. I don't think they fool ANPR, however you have seen OCR software for scanners, it's a possibilty. I'd be surprised if ANPR used the space at all and just looked up the computer for JY55RRR or R33AAA. However I think that they just make it difficult for it to read, and as a result if Jason goes through an ANPR camera by DVLA or Police he may be flashed up to be pulled.

Oh and whatever you do, do not keep the correct set in the boot, that shows plod you knew what you were doing and they may come down harder on you thiking you were trying it on or worse deliberatly decieving for a purpose.

If you do get doen' date=' I'll put money on it being from a traffic cop or one of the ANPR guys, coz their cameras wont be able to read your plate.[/quote']

ANPR can read them, and if it cant read a plate then it flashes it up with a photo and the ANPR operator will correct it quickly - there will still be a bike cop, traffic cop or group of coppers a mile or so down the road waiting to catch you if there's any major problems ;)

I got pulled over for the exact same thing a while ago. I'd moved one letter across so my plate read 'L33T AL' instead of 'L33 TAL'. I can only assume that the traffic cop who pulled me was just finishing the shift from hell, as he wasn't in the best of moods. I didn't get a fine, but i did get a lengthy lecture on the importance of legible number plates (my protests that my plates were perfectly legible fell on deaf ears), a producer, and i had to fit legal plates and have them inspected by an MOT tester. This was where the real fun began...

I fitted a set of 100% legal plates and got them inspected. I promptly went to the station with all my paperwork and handed it into the guy at the desk. He then disappeared for half an hour. When he finally returned, he asked why i was driving around with an invalid MOT certificate! Turns out that when my car had it's last MOT, the tester copied one of the digits wrong on the chassis number (he'd put a 3 instead of an 8). Cue another lengthy lecture about MOTs. I managed to convince the guy that it was an honest mistake (do you every examine every little digit on your MOT certificates?). He said if i could get a replacement certificate with the right number on by noon, he'd let me off with it. If not, he'd do me for driving with no MOT! By this time it was 11:30, so i had to charge down to the MOT place at illegal speeds, convince the MOT guy to give me a replacement ticket (he tried to palm me off with the original corrected in the wrong colour biro at first!), and then head back to the police station at even crazier speeds. I just made it, and that was the end of me and dodgy numberplates.

I hears ya loud and clear. :) [runs off to check his MOT certificate ;)]

So many tales of woe, but then again my friend drives around in London in a Civic with NO front numberplate! He has it in the boot and will just tell a cop it fell off if one ever asked. He did the same thing with his FTO and says he has never been pulled over, not once in the past 3 years of doing it.

I am sure for this section he was abusing his powers, especially demanding it before noon, like to see how that would stand up in court if you didn't make it...

Well, so far with my old Y plate in the windscreen, I've had several head to head encounters with the law and none have done a 3 pointer and come after me.... Guess most see I have a plate on show, even if not legally situated and angled, and don't care. I like that.

Not sure about running with NO front plate at all though....

:bump: Guess what happened tonight! ;):D

No producer thankfully, but I've had my first warning. And I was kind of asking for it too.

I reckon IF they do get you to change them, its going to be if they have stopped you for something else (unless your in one of the areas that they do a lot of 'routine checks'). Mind you depends what the plates look like they say. If it reads something like P165 SUK then it might be a bit less time before they stop you.

They were having a clamp down on people in this car park - two people got told off for wheelspinning, 1 was made to stop and swap drivers - I assume one had no insurance or something! :grumpy: I was just unlucky he was behind me as I left.

He did say though, "It looks smart, but its illegal" - I guess thats a compliment?

What is your plate jason? And what does it read as? i've not managed to find it yet, PM if you dont want in public or not at all if you dont want to disclose it.

  • Author

Its just got the 1st & 2nd letters of the 3 letters spaced out to make the letter, two numbers, and that 1st letter to read a word, and the last 2 digits is a familiar acronym. ;)

Totally illegal I know, but its my risk. :) At least the plate's the right size, and the font is legal & correct size.

Well, this poll is a little pointless now, as its been 4 months since I fitted the plates and only last night was I finally warned about them. :)

And no, I was not congratulated. ;) :grumpy:

Jason, I think it is quite clever what you have done with your number plate & like you say its not as bad as others have done/do, but then again robbery and armed robbery are both a crime but one is frowned upon more than the other.

Like you say it's your choice & risk I just hope that you are never in an accident where the police need to find your car by searching for your car based on information supplied by joe public who will no doubt not understand what the plate is supposed to be in its illegal form and evedently they not been able to get to you in time :(

Would be such a waste.

A lot depends on the area you live in i think.

I have been very lucky realy with mine.

Ran my megane coupe with no front plate for 2 years. Had german plates on my octy, mk2 golf gti and mk3 golf vr6 all with white rear plates

Standard plates on my fabia but then i have only had it 2 days

  • 4 months later...

a few years back my mate was stopped for having a dodgy numberplate but the letters were spaced correctly and the plate was not cracked... so what was the problem.....

well he had a black screw cover at the bottom of the F on his rear plate which kind of made it look like an E.....

For the last three years none of my cars have had front plates (illegal in Texas but not an offence you get pulled for)...

This may be my defence back in the UK, pull out the TX license and plead ignorance to the police about the lack of front plate!
