Vrs long term ownership

Featured Replies

Sorry if this is a repost, I did try a search.....

Anyhow my mrs is looking at getting a 2011 vrs done 34k and I've read a few horror stories about the tsi engine so feeling a bit unsure.

I know to check the usual things like having good Skoda service history, relevant recalls, etc

So my question is to vrs owners is this a long term car? How long have you owned it and in your ownership what issues have you had, if any?

We've had a Fr ibiza for the last 7 years (40k) and it's been faultless, but we'd like a small 5 door car and something with a bit of go

I've had mine 3 year from new now done 24k no issues at all (touch wood) used 99 fuel every drop, changed spark plugs at 20k put in 750ml oil every 4-5k. On this will be keeping it another 3 years fantastic little car best I've had! [emoji106]

I've had mine for three years (bought it when it was a year old) - no issues other than the bracket that holds the ECU somehow managed to become broken.

You should tread carefully - phone Skoda to find out if it has had any warranty work done - I'd say FDSH is a must and see if you can arrange a Skoda-approved warranty (go for two years) through a dealer. If you get a good 'un it's absolutely belting value for money (something the boo boys on here are happy to overlook).

As the 2 posts above.

& maybe see if a helpful Briskoda Member or a Twincharger owner can check the car out for you.

Great Bargains, but best have a warranty,

& a 'Skoda Approved Used Warranty' provided by Car Care Plan ltd is the one i would want.

As above do contact skoda UK for the warranty history. If history of oil consumption tests and or oil breather mod but no replacement engine then walk away.

Make sure you get a robust warranty, Without one I wouldn't touch a second hand CAVE engined car of that vintage to be honest.

Other than that they are a cracking car and a good buy!

The number I have is 0845 774 5745 - I'd phoned them when I was looking to sort an extended warranty

I think I'd only buy one through the dealer network tbh.

With the Description you often take them with a pinch of salt.

Xenon Headlights, Auto LIghts, Auto Wipers etc.

Examples often of what a Skoda might have.

If there are 'Heated Seats'  they might still need a Service Campaign field action doing.

& the DSG might need the Service Campaign action if needed and not already carried out.

Free Gratis though, regardless of age.  Skoda are paying.

I ran my first one (2010) for 50k without issues, and i'm upt to 31k in the new one..... I intend to keep this one for 100k.....

no worries :)

Another newbie question, where on the engine block will I see the engine code, and what's the best block to have ?

It'll be a CAVE engine (car is early 2011?). The revised CTHE would be the desirable one (although I'm a CAVEman with no issues).

The Blocks are the same and you will not see a Code on the Engine.

The ECU looks different externally with a CTHE compared to a CAVE one.

CTHE Engines were fitted late 2012.

But a CAVE engine car might have been First Registered late 2012, so you need to check the V5, Service Manual or Sticker in the boot,

and it has the Code,  CAVE or CTHE.

The engine code is in the boot and in the handbook , and on mine on the block too

Is that on the Barcode sticker or the Casting?

I think it's a sticker ... On the side under the solid air pipe to the turbo ...

On the Barcode Stickers on a CAVE i have not seen CAVE, but the number is there that matches the ECU.

It does on the Service Hand Book & Boot Stickers.

I would be interested if you could look at the CTHE engine sticker and see if 'CTHE' is on it.  Ta.

I'll do it at work tomorow, and take a pic, I can post tomorow night :)

Seed of doubt has been planted now, not going to bother, especially as my mechanic mate said he'd heard of a lot of problems with the DSG

Thanks for the replies, the hunt for a small sporty 5 door continues......

Not sure I agree about DSG but I can understand why you've decided to look elsewhere - good luck in your search.

Did the mechanic friend know what DSG is fitted to the twinchargers.?

There is a Service Campaign being done,

but there are not 'Lots of problems with DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG'.

seriously , a skoda master tech told me the DSG-7 in the fabia, is one of the MOST reliable dual clutch gearboxes out there. There are very few problems.

Not necessary the newer ones admittedly, but still got my doubts

Thank you very much wonderful.

You know how poor my photography is, as bad as my eyesight.

I have the CAVE pictures from the same location, i have posted them quite a few times,

it is just they virtually unreadable.
