Rear wiper not working automatically...are they meant to?

Featured Replies

I've set the rear wiper to come on automatically in the infotainment menus however it doesn't come on when it's raining and the fronts come on.

After reading the manual it doesn't really make it that clear whether it's meant to or not (page 55 of the digital manual)...

"When the rain sensor is active (the lever in the position 1) the function is only active if the windscreen wipers operates in continuous mode (no break between each wiping process)"

Does this mean the rear will only work automatically when the fronts are working at full pelt?

As I've got a rear facing camera I have to remember to switch the rear wipers on in rain which is a slight pain.

It'll only work on an estate when front is on full speed, and I think above a certain speed.

Hatch only gets it in reverse.

Balls. It's definitely working when I put it in reverse so guess that's all I get. Yes 5 km/h it says.

I am sure on mine when the wipers are in auto and on 1st speed (ie constant but not going like the clappers) the wiper will wipe intermittently.

I however dont like it as more often than not the rain isnt severe enough to warrant permanent activation of the rear wiper (even intermittently as it operates) so ive disabled it in the infotainment. Nothing worse than a rear wiper wiping a dryish screen, gets noisy and smears.

Again dont know for certain but have a feeling this only functions on estates anyway.

I had this thought last week. 'Automatic wiper' in infotainment means it will automatically wipe when fronts are one and you put it into reverse. Nothing to do with intermittent/speed of the front autowipers unfortunately.

I wanted it to be like the fronts. Leave it on auto and it wipes when it's wet for the same reason (cam in back). But no go :(

On my estate the rear wipes automatically when the front wipers are running at high speed. That is with the front wipers on Auto.

If my fronts are on high-speed then I'll likely just turn the rear on anyway?

If my fronts are being very intermittent as it's very light rain, then that's when having a rear wipe automatically would actually be useful rather than leaving it 'on' to just wipe a dry screen every 5 seconds, or having to flick it on/off manually every 30 seconds.

Missed a trick here, Skoda.

This is a standard feature on the Combi, as it was on the mkII combi.

As a hatch owner I feel cheated  :'(

You can always travel in reverse.

I never leave the rear wiper on because as soon as it stops raining (or the rain gets lighter) I'll forget to turn it off and then you get the bugger going "UNNNGHGHGGGHHHH" as it struggles to power itself across the screen.

Anyone else's auto wiper sensitivity absolute rubbish by the way? I have it on the most sensitive setting and you practically need to drive into the sea before it registers that the screen is wet

I quite like the sensitivity, the only downside is when you set of after it's been raining and all the water on the roof keeps rolling over the screen when you brake. It never realises, and you have to knock it down two notches to wipe it manually.

During actual rain it's been about 90% perfect for me so far.

Polish both front and rear screens with meths and water, 1 meths to 4 water, rain water just beads off them, you will get a momentary vaporising smear behind the wipers though, litterally its gone before it becomes an issue.

I have a MY2014 combi.

Automatic rear wiper works as follows:

- 20x normal speed front wipe: 1 rear wipe

- 10x high-speed front wipe: 1 rear wipe.

The biggest problem is when the sensor changes between Intermittent/normal/high-speed the counter restarts.

Usually this is the case. It works in thunderstorm and that's all.

Stupid from Skoda :(

Seems to be a feature of our Automatic Everything age that we now have to learn how to over-ride Automatic systems so we can get them to do what we actually want. Is this really better than having to do everything manually? (Answer = Maybe; Sometimes; Perhaps)

I reset my auto wipers by turn the intermitant off then on whenever I restart the car, this seems to help it keep up with whats going on.

BTW. Sensitivity setting, little level on top the stalk but, is the biggest raindrop ie, far right the most sensitive or least ?

bUt it can be disabled in setup,did this to mine as in very light rain moving forward the rear screen didnt get wet very quickly and the wiper just wiped the dry glass annoying after a bit

I always thought it was the biggest one (far right) however on re-reading the manual it says the following (copied and pasted from the PDF version):

Switches for setting the required break between the individual wiper strokes
(periodic windscreen wiping) or the wiper speed in rain (automatic
windscreen wiping in rain)

So that seems to suggest that it's the actual speed of the wipers which is controlled by that switch when the wipers are set to auto, rather than the sensitivity. I'm utterly convinced the dealer told me on handover that it controlled sensitivity, though.

Wonder if it's a coding thing if the combi can do it, albeit only when fronts are wiping at full speed.

There are different settings in the coding that effect the behaviour of the rear wiper. Some are available on some controllers (Central Electrics) and some aren't.

Rear wiper can be:

  • On with reverse engaged;
  • Active on intermittent front wiper;
  • Active in continuous front wiper;
  • Tear drop wiping;
  • Continuous movement of motor (?);

And probably some that I can't recall.

Their behaviour can be changed with VCDS if any of it bothers you.

Thanks!

What bothers me is that the standard set-up for the rear wiper seems to be total inappropriate for everyday use - regardless of whether the rain is light, moderate or heavy.

The rear wiper when 'on' (rhs stalk pushed forward) wipes every 5 seconds or so. Even in heavy rain this is too often and a smeared, dry window often results.

The rear wiper only appears to wipe intermittently when the front wipers are on in continuous mode.

What I would find more useful for everyday conditions is a rear wipe say every 20 - 30 seconds while the front wipers are on intermittent - but this does not appear to be possible?

It does work perfectly in the estate model, as said above the rear wipe runs according to the speed of the front, but only when the fronts are on continuous. To have it work on the hatch would be silly, the rear screen does not get rain on it when travelling and all you would do is wear out the rubber blade!
