How low do you let your fuel go

Featured Replies

Diesel or petrol.....half a tank, quarter, in/near the red....just thought I'd ask as I've heard more and more folk letting them go near red or in it as they just buy/use what they need

I like to live on the edge, fuel light Bingo every time

  • Me: minimum quarter tank The wife: fumes! I try to explain, but to no avail. I have been trying to explain thermostatic heating controls for 25yrs. Again, no joy! C'est la vie

  • The fuel pump picks up from the bottom of the tank - it has to, or you wouldn't be able to use it all - so anything at the bottom of the tank would go through first anyway.

1/4 tank no less and always vpower diesel

I usually fill up just before I expect the fuel light to come on..... Give or take.

I use 2 cars... And do the same with both.

Don't like to wait till I'm on reserve.... Just in case..( late..unexpected journeys needed)

See no point in putting in a £10 er at a time..

So simples.... Fill...use... Nearing reserve..fill again.

U hear lots of. Why fill...its heavier and wastes fuel etc..... But that's countered by more trips to fuel...or an extra Pie for lunch..lol

And lots of running till red..... Because I know the range.. ( I meet many many red range balancers at the side of the road... Suprised..lol)

Do you honestly see any diffirence

But some can't spend 50, 60, 70+ to fill so put in what they can afford at the time

Cleo its a YES from me! It's not necessarily the mph but the mpg plus the cleaning power of the vpower, especially with the "newer" common rail engines all fuel lines are kept cleaner and less problems with DPF's , for a few pennies more its worth it in my opinion however my opinion ain't worth much here anyway :) , the car really does run smoother on vpower but saying that I still belief in faires, even the little Korean dog gets vpower petrol of course

i run it until the last 5-10 miles if possible only fill up before then if going on a long run.

swmbo is paranoid & starts hassling me that her car needs filling up as it is getting near the 1/4 full mark

Parking up in Ayrshire in Winter i would be trying to keep my tank near full most of the time.

It is mild so far this winter,

but the difference between Daytime & Night time temperatures can mean condensation.

You now have Winter Formulation fuel from the Filling Stations,

but reducing H20 in your tank is a good idea when the cold weather comes.

Saves on Draining or replacing inline fuel filters.

The money can be in your bank or in your tank.

As well in your tank IMO.

Yes it's supposed to run/burn cleaner, I tried in my Astra diesel and thought it was quieter and smother but not sure if i was imagining either. I might try it in the Octy

I believe in fairies too

Steve.....that's close to the bone, my god

Your car can benefit from V-Power Diesel,

or Super Unleaded petrols if it is the type that it makes a difference to.

?

What kind of Octavia & what age is it.?

If you are trying to save pennies and wanting the cheapest fuel you can, it might not be worth buying premium fuels,

& for short journeys, engine never properly heated up etc,

it might not be worth buying.

+1

never more than 3 litres in when I refill it.

SWMBO knows her's does 45 miles from the fuel light coming on - having had to wait for the AA.

mind you learning the reserve fuel range on a new vehicle can be fun - took me ages to flush the water out of my Proton diesel's fuel system :D

I don't pay for "Super" unleaded or diesel, but I have noticed our FIAT is running a whole lot better now it's not drinking TESCO diesel.

Loads of choices in Ayr & it is as cheap as anywhere to fill up,,

& Sainsbury is cheap, as is Asda , Tesco & Jet ar Maybole.

The Diesel that get delivered to a Tesco really is not refined and formulated differently to other regular diesels to make it cheaper.

'Greenergy' are producing fuel and distributing to many suppliers.

Petrol

1/4 of a tank

Tesco Momentum

between 1/4 and 1/2 if I can. Don't really want to be sucking crud at the bottom of the tank through every refill! Even more important you do this if you have a metal fuel tank, as you dont want rust in the fuel system.

I do 600 miles/ week (in a normal week)

Normally I fill up every Monday a.m. occasionally partial top-up if I've done extra miles for some reason that week

Averages 50 - 52 litres per fill, so as tank is supposed to hold approx 60 litres I guess i fill up when tank is down to about 8 - 10 litres.

Did that ever happen?

The days of "crud" in fuel, and metal petrol tanks are long gone now, and anyway all car fuel pumps do, and always have, extracted the fuel from the lowest point of the tank anyway.

My JTD would beg to differ.  It ran (badly) on Tesco juice for a long time - often on 3 cylinders when cold - now it has branded juice its way better - especially in winter.

Tesco fuel is shocking

Supermarket Diesel here, when the light comes on I think about filling up but I don't treat it as a matter of urgency but when the display stops telling me how many miles I have left and says "refuel" that's my trigger point to definitely fill up.

camelspyder,

?

Which Brand.  ?

then we might know who refines, processes & Delivers.

Winter Spec Diesel to reduce in the Hygoscopic effect, Waxing Diesel

& Winter formulation petrol is now in the filling station tanks.

I tend to try and fill up where and when it is cheaper to do so.  As we live in a Tesco dominated area, fuel is expensive.  At the moment the two filling stations at the Carkeel roundabout are having a bit of a price war so I tend to run on BP (equal to most supermarkets but cheaper than Tesco).  Otherwise it is generally Supermarket fuel (ASDA or Morrison's with the occasional Sainsbury fill up if I'm in Plymouth).

It is normally when I'm on the red, but if I'm near and it's down to a quarter tank (and I'm not going to be near again in the next couple of days) I'll fill then.

I don't think I've ever had problems with fuel (these days I'm down to 25k per year, it used to be nearer 40k).

I do the same mileage each week and generally fill up with what I need, and usually let the range drop to about 20-30 miles or so, then put more in. Always V power petrol.

Mine can give a read out in litres as well as the gauge. Lowest I've had is 1.1l left, although I wasn't brave enough to look until I got to a petrol station, I just knew it was low!

Usually fill after the light comes on, or just before if it's a Friday so I don't need to worry at the weekend.
