How low do you let your fuel go

Featured Replies

Bike and car I usually wait for light to come on at which point needle is well into the red with about 60 miles remaining.
Then fill up to brim, 70% of time at Tesco's.
Years ago I used to only let the tank get down to half full in case I had an urgent journey to make but now retired and 24 hr petrol stations within about 4 miles I go from empty to brim.

I like to live on the edge, fuel light Bingo every time

  • Me: minimum quarter tank The wife: fumes! I try to explain, but to no avail. I have been trying to explain thermostatic heating controls for 25yrs. Again, no joy! C'est la vie

  • The fuel pump picks up from the bottom of the tank - it has to, or you wouldn't be able to use it all - so anything at the bottom of the tank would go through first anyway.

Cleo its a YES from me! It's not necessarily the mph but the mpg plus the cleaning power of the vpower, especially with the "newer" common rail engines all fuel lines are kept cleaner and less problems with DPF's , for a few pennies more its worth it in my opinion however my opinion ain't worth much here anyway :) , the car really does run smoother on vpower but saying that I still belief in faires, even the little Korean dog gets vpower petrol of course

VPower petrol definitely makes a difference MPG wise. Not sure VPower diesel does (in fact, its not meant to), but not arguing with the cleaning properties. I chuck a few tanks in every now and then just to keep things ticking over nicely. Not as consistent as I did with my old petrol car though. That was VPower everytime once id seen the light.

Don't know that ive noticed the diesel running smoother on VPower, but you could be right.

As for how low I let the tank get to. All depends. Sometimes I fill it up with 3/4s of a tank still in, because im off on a long journey and want a full tank. Or because im passing a garage cheaper than my local. Sometimes I wait until I have less than zero miles range on the trip computer, and the needle is down as far as it will go. But that's if I want to check the actual capacity I can fit in.

I have two cars on the family fleet and try and keep one full or close to. Although I had no problem getting fuel during the last fuel shortages I feel happier knowing I have 600 miles range in the tank if push comes to shove :sun:

I'm only pottering round home at the moment and my last tank of  V Power lasted a whole 260 miles. :D   Anything over 300 miles and I'm over the moon, although on long runs it's around the 400 mile mark.

As for how low I let it get, normally it's a quarter of a tank but this last refill the computer said 17 miles left and I wasn't too keen on that to be honest.  The commute to work is 6.6 miles each way but I bottled it and refilled when it said 17 miles.  Any sort of vigorous driving and that drops very quickly indeed.

Usually fill up when fuel light come on, circa 50 miles according to display - Had the Roomster diesel down to zero on the display this week and ran it for 10 miles before I hit a filling station - had me in a bit of a sweat!   At least I now know how far I can go!

Just filled the HTP up with esso supreme.

Its having one of its treats :)

I only use cheap texaco otherwise the fuel exceeds the car value

Till 0 miles

When my Citigo and Rapid get to a quarter I'll fill them both up.

I know I can still get to Andover if the fuel light comes on at Junction 1 of M3, roughly 55miles and as I do 112miles daily commute it's normally 9x56mile trips to a tank. But always fill the tank with Esso supreme diesel. Not too bad for a chipped 08 plate vRS

My Superb replaced a Subaru legacy 3.0 l auto which would manage 24-25 mpg and could quite easily get into the low teens if provoked :D so I can sympathise with your 260 mile range.

I just used to brim the VRS when it put fuel light on, did have it down to 0 miles to empty a couple of times but didn't make a habit of it,

Do same with corsa at moment as its a runabout car and i can easy do its 300 miles tank range in a week,

I usually run my xc90 down to fuel light and put 50quid in it that usually lasts a month as am trying to keep mileage down on it, if its going to get used then i will brim it but when it takes 90quid to fill it from bottom of red it takes abit of stomaching

I've just done a 670 Mile round trip from Cemaes bay to bordon in Hampshire, only took 3/4 of a tank running on vpower diesel and did not miss a beat , I'm pretty sure that this mpg is way over 70 and im convinced it's the fuel

What cars this?

In theory. Thats around 900 miles a tank? Wtf? Haha.

Golf mk6 1.6crtdi

I was always taught "never trust the fuel gauge" when my first Vauxhall Viva would show "Full" for about 250 miles and then the needle rapidly descend into the red over the last 30 miles.   Once on the red, you only had about 5 miles to go before a couple of splutters and stony silence would let you know you had misjudged it!

To this day, I zero the Trip Counter when I fill up and won't let the car go beyond 300-320 miles without filling up, regardless of what the gauge says, even though I know I can do about 450 miles on a full tank and electronic gauges are much more accurate.   Old habits are hard to break!

Usually end up running my Audi down to 5-10 miles remaining before either filling up or sticking £30 in. Mine has such a huge tank (90 litres plus reserve), it currently costs around the £100 mark to fill up, but a year ago it was possible to put £120 in. That full tank will see anything from just 250 miles to 450 miles depending on usage. 250 miles of town driving, or 450 miles of steady driving.

I normally fill up when the warning light comes up, (approx 75 miles to go).

For the last 2 and a half years I've filled with normal (fuel save) Shell diesel. Even when on holiday, I've found a Shell to fill up. As you might guess I do have a points card. I have used VPD but don't find any difference (only in price!) I use Millers additive instead.

first of all, 90litre fuel tan-!!! And second, i think id cry if id burned through 120quid - 150e... Worth of fuel in 450mls... From brimmed id be at the 1/2 mark on me fuel gauge in 450mls :D

If it's under 1/4 full, and always above the red warning light coming on. I'm currently driving around 1000 miles a week, so filling up regularly mostly with Tesco Momentum, or Shell V Power. I'll only ever put a splash of other brand 97 RON fuel in if I'm unlikely to get to the next Tesco / Shell garage, and only use 95 in extreme emergencies! I'm having a fuel economy issue right now: the mapped octy was able to see 35mpg easily on a mixed m way run, 40 if I drove specifically for economy. The Cupra is lucky to see over 30 on same mixed roads, and full on eco mode only 33. Other owners are seeing mid to high 30s with only a little effort.

Your fuel consumption is good compared to what i drive everyday ..... 7.2 MPG at the best with a 275L fuel tank :D £330 full probably drinks about half a tank a day > 6.7 L Cummins   Shame it hasn't got a straight through pipe would sound bliss ! and it gets filled for me every night

If thats what your talking about haha great potential !

But i was talking about the enviro 400 ;)

I had '0' range showing on the PID yesterday and still had 3 miles to go to the petrol station. I managed it though and then squeezed almost 36.5 litres into the 35 litre tank!

Bingo!
