Strange goings on from the odometer button/display...

Featured Replies

Hi All,

06 vRS with basic dash display.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I've recently noticed my odometer/trip display behaving very strangely. When driving it will periodically switch from total miles to trip miles, and when showing trip miles will reset itself regularly, all of this without me going anywhere near the button.

Although twisting left/right for clock adjustment works fine, I'm guessing the contact when pressing the button in is a bit f*cked,

It's not a major issue at the moment, but it's bothering me and obviously if I ever come to sell it'll look a bit dodgy.

It also doesn't look like a single replaceable part, am guessing I'd have to replace the whole dash, which will obv be a significant cost for such a small problem!

It could be simply grime inside the stalk button, possibly holding it depressed giving the odd behaviour?? There is a guide on here for cleaning the cruise control stalk which is similar. Worth a try perhaps.

It's the button/switch in the dash itself that seems to be the issue, the one right next to the readout. Controlling the functions of the trip computer using the rocker on the end of the right stalk still works perfectly, thanks though.

Ah yes I misread it.  It does sound like there is some dust in there or something.  Never tried this myself but presumably you can take the glass front off, and perhaps spray a little contact cleaner on it?

Not sure if I'll be able to get the front off without some significant dismantling though, anyone taken a dash pod apart?

Or try spraying it and hoping it goes in there whilst constantly keep pressing the button :D
But please disconnect the battery first, dont want any leccy jumping between contacts!

It's actually pretty easy.

Remove the trim below the cluster (adjust the wheel right down to improve access). Just 2 screws.

Then using a long metal ruler or similar slide it between the top of the cluster and dash on either side to release the clips.

The whole cluster will then come out (it's plugged in though obviously).

If you disconnect the dash you your steering light will be on after and you may need to instigate basic settings with VCDS.

You can then remove the 4 screws and unclip the front perspex panel.

Hi chr1staylor,

Did you get this sorted? I seem to have a similar issue. I am unable to reset the trip counter. The reset button next to the speedo seems to do nothing.

Cheers

(Belated thanks to Phil for the detailed instructions posted above, although not needed in the end)

Hi Tim. I noticed that if I pressed the button really lightly it would occasionally work. Then I made a point of repeatedly pressing the button every time I got in the car for a few weeks and that seems to have more or less sorted it. I think it was largely down to the fact it hasn't been used for ages, the contact had dried out, regularly and repeatedly tapping it brought it back to life.
