If it's a brand new cluster then any dealer can do it for you.

They just have to follow their instrument cluster replacement procedure.

Do you mind me asking how much the dealer charged you for the maxidot cluster itself?

I've been wanting to do this for a while but havent been able to source a cluster used

Edit:

EddieNL and Techie1 have done this for people with good results.

Techie is probably closer to you i think.

I dont think I'll bother for that money haha

If it's anything like the Octavia you can buy a used one and have it fitted.

I got mine for £50 off ebay. Cost me £60 to have it fitted and coded.

Sorry for the silly question, but I would like to replace my cluster with a used maxidot one. By coding you mean that it is able to keep your current mileage and transfer that number to the used maxidot cluster?

Correct. Your immobiliser should be re-programmed and the mileage adjusted to match your current mileage (or KMs of course).

Otaylor,

The skodateile ones work out around 160 plus shipping which i didnt think was to bad.

I'm surprised dealers offer to do this.

So similarly, the system is that easy to clock? I'd assumed that the mileage would be stored in the ECU rather than in the cluster.

Probably they are more open minded than ours. Or they are more willing. Or they do believe that a happy customer will come back again. Or they just want to make their money. Or ...

Try to buy this in Greece. I tried, I failed, I bought it from the link I provided.

I rest my case.

It's stored in both.

The one in the dash can be adjusted but I don't think the ECU can (not easily anyway).

There was a case a while ago on here of someone who bought a car that they later found out to be clocked. Someone had adjusted the dash mileage but upon checking the value stored in the ECU there was a huge difference.

Not many people will plug a skoda into vcds when purchasing will they.

I know its wise to do similar with more expensive cars. GTR's are often taken to a specialists to check everything over, max temps n that.

Dont think many people will know about it on a skoda though?

Could be more cases than anybody knows?

How easy/expensive is vcds, is it just acase of loading it onto a laptop?

Few hundred quid iirc

You need more than VCDS for doing the cluster swap though unfortunately.

Just think8ng this car is going to be a keeper so might be worthwhile getting. Still after someone to do a maxidot

Whilst VCDS can do most of the work to get the new cluster up and running, unless you have the 4 digit security code for your existing cluster you'll not be able to code the new cluster immobiliser. The code can be obtained, but its another cable and more software to read the SKC from the existing cluster. A new cluster will come with its own code, but if replacing with a used one it becomes more complicated if you do not get its code.

A dealer does not need the codes, since they are read online from VAG HQ when following the guided process for swapping the cluster.

It can be done, you could do with PM'ing Eddie_NL if he's still around on the forum (Not been on for a while myself) He did my retrofit, and fitted the MFSW at the same time on my scout, using a used Dashpod.
