Removed and cleaned EGR, Replaced and snapped a thread!?!?!?

Featured Replies

Morning All,

So at the weekend i removed and cleaned my EGR valve as per guide on the site by "Dann2707" Which is pinned to the front page. Great guide if anyone is planning on attempting this.

So ran into a few problems which were more of a Ball ache than anything. But the one big problem.....

When I was reattaching the EGR the flexi pipe that attaches to the bottom of the EGR, then attaches to the pipe that's connected to Ex manifold (I think).......I have over tightened the nut....and in turn has snapped the thread off the stud and left with with one nut to clamp the pipes together.

Does anyone know if this can be easily sorted? Or is it a new pipe, new manifold or needs to be drilled out?

Here's some pics of a dirty/shiny EGR and the nut i have snapped with the thread still attached :)

Cheers all

I think you need item 3 here. M8 x 25 'threaded pin' N 0445145.

Is there enough remaining stud in the manifold to get some grips on, or weld something onto?

Thanks for the quick reply Wino! Would seem that in that item 3 looks like what I need but, Its at the other end of the pipe that attaches to the manifold if that's correct? So if there is a pipe that attaches there....its the other end of it...that the flexi looking pipe then attaches to, then goes up to connect under EGR?

Does item 5 connect onto another pipe or is it directly onto the manifold?

Yea don't think there is anything to grip onto seems to have sheered it off from inside the recess. Utter Ball-ache!!

Er, yeah, I think.

Item 5 (in your diagram), the flexi pipe, attaches to the exhaust manifold at its lower end.  The two studs, item 3 in my link, are screwed into the manifold, then the nuts (item 8 in your diagram) fix the pipe flange in place onto the other threads of these studs. It would be a lot clearer if it was all on one diagram. :D

The manifold diagram I posted looks confusingly different to the reality as shown on Dan's image here:

Access is awkward, by the looks of that, for removing the remnants of the old stud. :swear:

That's the beauties mate! Over tightened one like a chump. As soon as i felt it go loose my ass went lol.

Will deff need to be drilled out if anything, Will have to come off as i don't think there is anything of the old stud to grip onto.

You think its ok to run like it is? gasket got changed and the one remaining nut and stud id down nice and tight??

I'm pretty sure it'll leak a bit from that point if only held on by one, so probably will hear it being a bit louder than usual. Shouldn't be a problem for a few days unless you do a lot of miles.
