Easy ways to save weight?

How much do you weigh?

Someone has penned a great little piece on here re Trackdays and all removable stuff etc.

Worth a search for it.Might end up costing nothing! (will try and find it unless someone has the link)

I understand the engine weighs a fair bit, try taking that out. Wont help your 0-60 times though.

Other ways could be taking out the rear seats, spare wheel and the other bits that go with it. Near empty tank. Carbon fibre stick on stuff from halfords that should save weight as carbon fibre is lighter than metal.

carbon fibre bonnet  and front wings. :D

Might exceed the budget though. :o

Just stick with no spare or back seats - thats enough in itself.

If you want to get a bit more serious and often drive solo, the passenger seat is a good lump of weight too. - about 30kg I reckon.

Cut lumps out of the front bumper, and use a stick on number plate. ;)

Tape up all the body joints except the drivers door, a lot more aerodynamic then. Well it works with my glider. :)

Yeah, that works. Even better to have your numberplate INSIDE the car - gets it out the aerodynamic flow of the car. ;)

sell it and buy a petrol engined model.

I think someone recently posted a similar thread but he weighed all the items he took out. Might be worth a search.

I remember someone mentioning the balance front to rear might cause some handling problems as it's all removed from the rear i.e. seats and spare wheel

take out all the soundproofing and carpets that'll save loads

There's been a thread about this recently with some good points and even a photo, I would search but i'll leave that for someone else ;)

Parcel shelf, spare wheel (just the spare wheel removed alone is meant to give a huge difference PMSL) glove box, log out before driving, helium filled tyres, rear boot filled with helium balloons, more helium baloons under the bonnet, remove bonnet completley (although you may have problems keeping the helium baloons under there) Remove all seats, remove headunit and speakers, all carpets, mats plastic bits of trim, ariel, badges, front grill, rear bumper, replace windscreens with perspex, carbon fibre all other panels, 1.8t conversion (1.9 PD130 weighs quite a bit)

Depens how extreme you want to go and wether its worth it, I use my car to get to A-B with a grin on my face, you might track it every weekend and do 0-60 sprints

Good luck :)

"log out before driving" Whats turning off your computer got to do with it? ;):D

With the back seats, spare, carpet, mats, and all the other crap taken out of the car, you are looking at around 50kgs lighter. That equates to 10 bhp released from duty to get you where you are going a bit quicker. It does make the rear light and prone to twitching, and even sliding on the odd occasion :D .

It is also noisy as hell, but the noise on its own makes it feel like you are going faster. I have no facts to suggest the car is really any quicker, but it certainly should be.

Always "park your lunch" at home to save another couple of pounds.......

Hi

Get a hole saw and an angle grinder. Cut away most the inner skins of the doors, bonnet and hatch and remove any reinforcement material leaving flappy shells. Same for all other non structural sheet / pressed areas. Remove all inner trim, carpets and dashboard. Remove all sound absorbing materials. Remove all but the driver seat. Anything not structural should end up removed or looking like Swiss Cheese (couldn't spell Gruyere). Replace all flat or gently curved glass areas with 1mm polycarbonate sheet. Remove all window winder gear. Remove sunroof and weld in thin steel panel. Should be good for a couple of hundedweight.

For reducing unsprung mass, you need to spend lots of money.

PS running on the road without a spare is illegal unless you have an approve tyre reinflation / sealer device. No use at all if you really damage a tyre though.

If my wife takes all the junk out of her Clio, It'll go like **it off a shovel !!

Are you sure about this? I thought it was illegal to have a spare with no tread on and not road worthy, but perfectly fine to not have a spare.

Thats why your car will fail an MOT with a non road worthy spare but will pass if you have no spare at all.

I'm pretty sure thats not correct  , possibly a mixup maybe?

You can drive without a spare, however, if you have a punture, a recovery company will not help you (unless the car has no provision for a spare, ie Smart).

Also you can pass an MOT without a spare, if you do include it, it must have a legal tread.

Thought a spare or other facility was obligatory for something. Checking up, no, it is not illegal to run without one in the UK. I read somewhere that a spare or other emergency facility was obligatory, but cannot remember where. To gain type approval perhaps? The condition of the spare is not an MOT issue AFAIK you can have the canvas showing and no air in it. The spare is not examined in the MOT.

Hellfire, you really do seem rather obsessed with all of this... someone said buy a petrol car.... if you want storming performance, this is really the best option, otherwise, I really dont see the point.

As the name implies' date=' unsprung weight consists of the components that aren't sprung: wheels, hubs, brakes and some of the suspension components (before the springs, suprisingly...)

Sorry that really cracked me up (you're right, just a funny read ;))

Urban myth that one, the spare isnt checked on an MOT.

Hmm - being pedantic but it is where I get my MOTs done, they won't fail it or note it on the paperwork though, but if it's below legit they mention it :)

An MOT tester is free to advise anything he likes on an MOT.

But it isnt part of the MOT to check it, if you take your car to an MOT with a boot full of crap or ICE will they remove it to check the spare? No. Neither will they unbolt the carrier under my pick up to check the spare. Its up to you if carry a spare or not. And if you mount it it has to be legal.
