Remapping kit

Featured Replies

Howdy. So I was bored and looking and things to make my Sport pretty. (I'm trying to make him a VRS.) I came across this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191235013504

Now I will admit I know naff all when it comes to what goes on under the bonnet. (I am a girl after all) so interested to know your take on things, is it legit, worth it, warranty void potential, ease of installation etc etc?

You see, when I'm going to fetch supplies to make sandwiches and bake... Faster I'm there and back the better. ;) Hahaha

This is my opinion but I'd avoid that like the plague. Another nasty gimmick. If you want a warranty voiding remap then get a proper well known one but are up in the £300 area.

I wouldn't risk it. Any remap can potentially void the warranty.

Shark can provide an STS ( switchable tuning system) which saves the standard map and uploads a stage 1 map.

You can then switch back to the standard map if you wish. I think it also doubles up as a fault code reader

id vote shark performance with an sts kit like dark_hero said

Thanks guys I will have a look at Shark they are based in the same town as me so I will pop in.

Personally, I would avoid remapping while the car is still under warranty. Once that lapses, go nuts.

This is what Shark have to say

Hi Natalie,

We have worked closely with DTUK to develop the FSR and FSR+ tuning boxes.

With the FSR tuning box you would still retain your warranty as they are completely removal. The box also quotes increases to 125hp and 210nm torque so is very comparable to our ECU map and are priced at £479 inc vat.

I can't comment on the Revo figures as the same vehicle can produce wildly different numbers depending on the dyno it was tested on.

Thanks,

Matt

I was seriously considering a Shark re-map but tbh since my car has had a 10K service it feels a lot more torquey and really flies when up at 4k+ revs!

Anyone know if the turbo and clutch are the same (size?) on the 1.2 as on the 1.4 ? the re-map for the 1.2 would bring it up virtually to the 1.4 spec?

The clutch and turbo are the two things that would concern me unless they are the same as the 1.4 because of the extra power they had to handle?

Edited by charles

If the upgrade gives you 125bhp the 1.4tsi is 122bhp.

I would think the clutch and turbo could quite easily handle just another 20bhp on a stage 1 setup. I would say these run more than 105 bhp from standard if they were put on a rolling road [emoji106]

Less power and more money when compared with the Revo remap, I would go Revo which has an impeccible reputation when it comes to VAG remaps.

They offer an increase to 129 - 144bhp for £399.

Unless you're going to be doing a lot of motorway driving I wouldn't bother with a re-map, too expensive, spend it on Radley bags like my sister does!

Hahaha now why would I want a Radley bag? Is it because 'that's what girls do'?

Usually not the kind of girls who spend their time researching the best engine remaps ..... :p

Do you mean pretty much the same power (Shark would rather under quote and over achieve than just get people in with big headline figures) and more expensive? The Revo map is £399 + VAT whereas the Shark price includes VAT.

I'd like to see one that makes 144bhp on Shark's rolling road.

Natalie, if you live in Mansfield and you'd like a demonstration, give us a call.

Hi, I rang up earlier and got told you can't give me a demonstration on the tuning boxes, only the remap! Not after a warranty voiding remap. :( I've been recommended another as well as Revo, racechip.com offer 136bhp for 549€ which is less expensive than Shark also.

I've just put that figure into the exchange rate checker and get €549 as being £416 = £17 more expensive?

Maybe you need to decide if you want a tuning box or remap though and then narrow that down to who you want it from.

BTW, not all remaps are the same and a 144bhp headline figure map may not drive as well as one that has a more usable power curve with a lower headline output. In other words, don't be misled by attention grabbing figures.

You are also in the enviable position of living somewhere that has someone with a wealth of knowledge just on your doorstep!

DTUK FSR tuning box from Shark is £479,the one above is £417.

Pretty much highlighted from the get go I wasn't interested in a remap, on a 14plate car it's just silly.

Also, not easily swung by figures... Hence this thread, to educate myself and decide what's best, Revo, Shark and Racechip are all recommended so of course I'm going to compare, and more power for the same/less money anyone would steer towards that.

Shark might be on my doorstep, and I am not ruling them out. I doubt any business would give an unbiased opinion however!

Do you mean pretty much the same power

No I meant more power. Revos MINIMUM increase is to 129bhp which is more power, anything above there minimum quote (up to 144bhp) is again, yet more power.

In summary I meant more power, not the same power because it is more power. Hope this clears things up.

If you are under-quoting what is your maximum power increase?

Fair one

I think REVO are a reputable company and pretty sure they wouldn't falsify figures.

Tell you what !

I'm just going to sit back let you lot argue it out, then pick the best one when you all got them re-mapped. :D

Did you end up getting the rapid chipped ?

Yeah I'm a bit unusual apparently, I work in IT, like cars, video games and don't really see the point in spending money on clothes, bags and shoes when I can have a nice car and new gadgets. ;)

You sound perfect!

A really good way of getting a few more horses under the bonnet is to fill her up with super unleaded. Fifth gear did a programme on it about 2 years ago and scientifically proved that it gives you more BHP, I only use unleaded in mine and it drives better and seems to give better MPG. P.s if you look like your pic you don't need to worry about new clothes, pretty face and nice car does the trick!

If you've got a petrol I should hope you're only using unleaded :D

Hi Nels.  I've done 25K in just over a year now from new, mostly motorway driving in my 1.2 Rapid Sport and have tried Super Unleaded but

flooring the pedal does not seem make any difference ...apart from more costing more ££'s to fill up !
