Think My Clutch is Slipping

Featured Replies

When travelling on my private road at about 85 mph in 6th :) , put your foot to the floor and the rev's rise quite quickly then seem to reduce in revs and then picks up again but the car seems to be accelorating all the time  . It somtimres does it in 5th  .............Is the cluth on it way out

:( Sounds like it to me. How much power is it putting out?

Is been superchipped but never been on a rolling road 130ish from stock Plus 30ish so say 160/170 maybe??

Hmmm  Not a massive amount then. Might be worth trying a visit to the stealer? However I would check it does this in all gears, say 3rd and upwards. The usual sign of a fading clutch though, is revs rising and NO acceleration to match. (obviously this would concur with your symptoms if the revs are rising twice as fast as normal under same "progress" ;) being made.)

HTH. Ross, you take over from here, I'm way out my depth now.... :D

Forgot to add..............Once the revs have dropped and they start to pick up again It does'nt seem to do it. It's only at the start of the rev Increase. 85mph 2.5 k revs foot down revs to 3k rapidly then falls back to 2.5ish then rises steadily as speed increases. Does that make sence!!!!

Makes perfect sense. :) And the only way revs can rise and acceleration not match it likewise is for the clutch to slip, allowing the revs to increase but not putting this through to the gearbox and therefore the drive wheels.

God, I do one conversion to my car and I'm sounding like a mechanic. (well, close) Where's that letter of resignation?

Thanks Jason.....................Any suggestions New Clutch, Upgraded clutch any idea on price  Can I preserve the one I have in anyway  ..............Questions......Questions......Questions :(

Can I preserve the cluth by using gears ie:- Instead of flooring it in 6th drop it into 3rd/4th then boot it......................or Don't boot it

I usually find a bit of adjustment in the clutch control lever on the gearbox helps a bit but that would be a purely mechanically operated clutch (non hydraulic) and I know frig all about the Fabia.

It's shutting the door after the horse has bolted though as by that stage the clutch is usually on the way out.

Can change a clutch on a 1.3 Nova or Astra in 30 mins but that's the exception to the rule. Most other cars are a right pain in the **** in my experience.

Could the weight of the wheels etc cause the cluth to slip Bigger wheels more weight to drag around.......................Un chip the car

If it's superchips u got, I think they can revert to stock ECU for free. I would try this first and see if it still slips. If yes, bring in to dealer to sort while it's in std. ECU mode before getting superchips to remap it.

obviously an uprated clutch is the answer to the long term clutch eating issue when chipped. One reason I got mine done whilst I had the opportunity. I've found I can pull away from a standing start better in 2nd than in 1st.... Not even got turbo boost yet but this clutch is still soooo nice.

2nd gear starts - lol.. perfect for the traffic light grand prix.

Leaves them in a wake of smog too! :D

I have had the same problem with mine a few 000 miles ago and i know others with remapped fabias have also experienced this.

Sounds an unusual solution but try running in 6th that about 70mph, engage the clutch, and then rev the car very hard and dump the clutch fast. Do this two or three times at above 70mph. The car doesn't like it but it did seem to reset mine. I am revod and running about 165bhp and big tourque. Somebody on the forum suggested this approach to me. I've no idea what it does to the car good or bad.

I was quoted me about

And how is your clutch coping with this then? :D 2nd feels more like a 1st and a half to me, after coming from the experience of 1st & 2nd in a 5 speed.

Thought mine was doing it at one point early in the year (colder weather) but i'm either paranoid about it or it has cured itself.

Running well over 300lbsft and it seems perfectly ok at the moment.

Not abusing clutch is key i suppose - I too dont tend to boot it in the higher gears below 2000rpm.

This has only happened to me twice in over 22000 miles (remapped since 47 miles!).

I rev my car fairly high though, and never rev from low rpm in a high gear... It's just asking for trouble.

Yes, must not do it really - only done it a couple of times honest! :D

Need that JBS clutch - which I might have if you hadnt nicked the one i was going to have! lol.

Pipped to the post.. ha. Swiped from right under my nose more like! lol.

I'll give you a go next time there's a meet both of us go to. Kind of try before you buy (or attempt to again.... ;))

Ok sounds good to me - will the turbo be working by then? ;)

Probably not, I'm using it as a "I'm leaving it so I run the clutch in properly" excuse now. Come on HILLS, sort me out that damned sensor FFS! :grumpy:

I get it if I try and pull away too low down in the rev range in 6th. Even more so if I'm carrying a full load of people.

what sort of mileage do people get out of their clutches on the fabia vRS? interested to know how long mine will last... (no chip).....

This must be a very common fault with the fabia as i found out when i picked mine up from skoda yeasterday with a new clutch and the dealer told me there was another one coming in with the same problem! were can i get an upgrade from when the 2nd clutch goes?
