PAS fault questions

Featured Replies

My son has recently bought a 2001 Y 1.9tdi Comfort. The other day whilst doing 3 point turn, he hit full lock and lost power assistance and got the PAS fault light up.

Having read the PAS fault post and done searches on the forum I have checked the battery, had he battery box out and checked fluid level - ok, also checked main battery earth. Light still on and no assistance.

Following on from this rather than stabbing about in the dark I have bought a data cable and downloaded vcds lite. On plugging into the car vcds was unable to connect to the controller.

To me that would appear that either the pump unit is totally goosed or if I'm lucky it could be a loose wire/plug issue.

i have yet to buy a Haynes book of lies, what is the best way to access the pump to check the connections or remove it, also how can I idenify if it is a KOYO pump or not?

Thanks

Chris

Ought to get proper VCDS on it.  See what the power steering module thinks is wrong to throw the light on.

Could be angle sensor going out of range for some reason if it was at the extreme end of the lock.  Pump failure isn't that common in my experience.

i got angle sensor and pump up for grabs if needed

You should check the fuses first, main pump fuse is on top of the battery 50 or 60A, the fuse for the data link is number 7 in the fuse box inside the car, 5A from memory.

VCDS should give you a J500 fault if the pumps control board has blown, check the CAN gateway for it.

TRW pumps actually say TRW on the ID label, Koyo do not, you can get access to it through the front bumper by removing the N/S foglight or the blanking cover if not fitted.

Did check fuse and link as per PAS post, both OK, will try and have a look through fog light aperture to check connections. I take it the lite version of vcds should talk to steering so having no coms/response is a fault rather than a software limitation?

Yes, check the CAN gateway for a J500 code.

Right plugged it in again and yes there is a J500 code fault on the CAN gateway.

So it is sounding like the pump.

I was wanting to check the connections first before fully diving in to get the pump off. It was mentioed above that they can be accessed via the fog light aperture. The haynes book say to pry the lens off and then undo 2 screws, the lens looks to be glass and I dont want to give it too much and break it as it doesn't want to move. Is this the right way to get it out or is it bumper or arch liner out?

No, you remove the black plastic grille panel next to the foglight which will expose two torx screws enabling you to remove the foglight as well.

No bad connections found, bit the bullet and ordered a pump from evilbay, so hopefully should sort the problem.

it did look as though the pump had been looked at some time in the past as there was signs of silcon sealant round the casing joint and it was a replacement as it is a 2002 pump on a 2001 car.

Was it a TRW pump or SMI/Koyo?
