What's the price of a new front windscreen?

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anyone knew what I'm looking at paying for a new front windscreen for the Octy VRS?

I'm in the totally bizarre and unheard of situation where I now need my 4th new windscreen in as many years (I've so far had two front windscreens and one rear in the past 3 years and I've not got a cracked front screen again).

Insurance made it clear that if I claimed another windscreen they would hit my NCB (because of the number of screen claims). Don't think I can last this out until end of February when my insurance would be renewed/changed.

I've never had to buy a windscreen outside of insurance before.

Is it a heated screen or standard, think would be about 150 160 pound mark heated is another matter i know from lads at work ford mondeo is circa 500 pounds.

I think it will be more. I paid 170 for a door window fitted by autoglass outside the insurance policy. that was on a 2010 fiesta.

Paid £400 for an Audi S4 front windscreen last year.

Bizarrely the main dealer was the cheapest price for a genuine part, whereas the windscreen companies were about £50 more for a genuine one.

Don't forget to ask for a cheeky discount, they will nearly always knock 5-10% off if you ask very nicely :)

when I got the screen chaged through the insurance I asked autoglass how much a screen is. They were saying its bout £500 ish

This is not a benchmark to go by. They are probably at the very top end of reatil pricing (their CEO once said that they give their best customers their best discount; the majority of their work is for insurance companies).

Shopping around is best although every man and his dog will claim to be a windscreen fitter worthy of a knighthood, yet most will be ready to shave a tenner off the previous quoter to try and capture the job. Recommendation is always better, especially if it comes via a reliable and trusted source.

Cheapest will always be cheapest, not necessarily the best quality. Despite what anyone says, if the screen does not bear the car manufacturer's logo, it is not a genuine part and not as good as one. There is no substitute for OEM - genuine - parts. Anyone who claims the difference is merely a stamp (and is added for the dealers) doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

Thanks for the posts. Fearing the worst I've sent off an email to a few companies - 2 of which have responded so far.

Silvershield have quoted me £185+vat fitted and "Budget Windscreens" £125+vat fitted. I'm now getting back to both of them to find out if this is genuine glass or not - all of the replacements I've had over the past 4 years were done by Autoglass and all of them bare the VW/Audi badges.

For reference it is not heated, standard OEM tint and rain sensor fitment.

I paid £125 fitted for a medium car

£165 for large car

Shop around.

Autoglass is usually the most expensive.

But best to get personal recommendations from someone local rather than any national company - as different fitters will differ even in same company!

£360 for a VX Combo windscreen

Windscreens are one of those things where it does pay to get the yellow pages out and ring round.

Still waiting on a couple of quotes.

Both companies I emailed back confirmed it would be "equivelant glass" which of course makes sense - VW/Audi con't make their own screens.

My 3 prices are:

Budget Windscreens - £150 fitted

Silvershield - £222 fitted

Autoglass - £385 fitted

Now if they all use the same glass then it's the fitter I need to worry about. But you have to assume there is a difference somewhere between £150 & £385, surely?

I have bought 2 screens for 2 previous cars. First through a local fitter, and the second with Budget Windscreens. Cannot fault either of them. Budget Windscreens came and did it in my works car park, took about an hour. Never had an issue with it, and it took a few stone hits without chipping. Theirs was £90 for a Mk3 golf, laminated with top tint (tinted was cheaper). Autoglass wanted £390 for the same thing, £430 without tint!

Personally, I'd definitely use them again if I need to. But then if Agriglaze (first one, £94 for a Rover 600, laminated and tinted) are cheaper, I'd use them. I find smaller, local firms are willing to move on price aswell...

Budget Windscreens

Which one? There are several (different) companies using the same name.

One of them makes me shudder.

I expect most of them are just a franchise anyway - a name to sell to whoever wants to start up their own business.

Chap who came out to mine did the job great. Glass is not by the OEM, the makers name is "Nordglass" - a little research shows they supply glass to all industry, however are known for supplying nautical glass.

Anyway, glass fitted well, no wind noise etc.

Oh I did manage to get a chip in it less than one month afterinstallation - thankfully Autoglass repaired that without any issue.

But me and glass over the past few years has been a nightmare.
