New Battery - Which Is Best?

Featured Replies

Sorry to start another battery thread, I did search but mostly vRS ones and anything else old.

Right I fell that my battery is fast approaching the end now and I am doing 90% short runs so not a help at all with condensation meaning fan on full whack, lights wipers sat nav and cameras lol, plus it's COLD! Since it's 2015 now I am declaring my battery 14 years old :) I have a battery tester / charger for the bike I can use on cars etc too but it's MIA at present :( So with the lack of any of the big chain brand places to roll into to check, I am just going to call it a day. I am tempted to go to somewhere like Halfords (60 odd mile round trip) if it's around the same price, so that I can throw it back at them for any warranty issues, rather than the hassle and expense of getting it sent back if I order online. I want to know what's the best to go for though for my 19TDi as ECP etc spits up a good few. I haven't had to change a battery in the last 23 cars I have owned so no idea what I am looking for with regards to numbers etc, want more than the min.

Get the best CCA you can afford the higher they are the better it will start in the cold I think mine was around £80 from ECP.

Does not post to Northern Ireland comes up for it automatically on my ebay account :(  Annoyingly a hell of a lot of companies say that now.

When I put my details into Halfords site this one comes up as best value £85 4 year warranty a calcium one 680CCA? Are Halfords own ones any good? http://www.halfords.com/motoring/bulbs-wiper-blades-batteries/batteries/halfords-calcium-battery-hcb096-4-yr-guarantee

ECP has one £4 less that is an Excide with 760CCA and 2AH more though :( I suppose there is one ECP in NI but it's in Belfast and would be one hell of a mission to get up there to throw it back under warranty if the car was dead as a result. £40 odd on buses ffs!

It would be worth contacting them as it may not be much more for NI and you have a superior battery

ECP do free delivery.

Or carparts4less - ECP in disguise but cheaper

They have it the same price on main site and ebay just not amazon lol. But they do have the classic line on the Amazon page........"Please note that our couriers place restrictions on certain areas that we can deliver batteries to. Upon placing an order we will check the delivery address and if there is an issue we will contact you within 24 hours. If your address falls outside the delivery area then we will issue you a full refund.

I could go into a local parts place, but they will want a lot more for a craper battery. I am still in shock as the last one I bought was for my 1.4 Escort Harrier and it cost £30 and that seemed a lot! lol

After trawling through Ebay sellers with same one I found this place for £2 more that don't mention NI being next door to China, so have placed order. Normally what happens in this instance is I get a email or call tomorrow mid to late morning telling me they were too lazy to set up their terms correctly or set up their Ebay account with excluded postal code areas and cancel my order or want a silly amount for delivery, to which I give them both barrels (sometimes I win and they concede). I will let you know what the outcome is.  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121461968157

Cool

There is one battery that is dual branded, the Bosch S5 and Varta E44.

77Ah and 780CCA (Cold Cranking Amps).

They are sized as an 096 which I know fits the MkII but not sure about your MkI.

Sounds like you are sorted now but these batteries are widely available and get very good reviews. The Bosch is about £80 delivered, the Varta about £10 less.

Hope you get it sorted.

Halfords and ECPs main site on putting my reg in and checking again with manually putting cars details in all came up with 096's too, so I am just going off that out of laziness :D

I think Bosch is the best choice unless you want to go for something like Optima gel

Many of my freinds and my customers have Bosch batteries and they are pretty satisfied, unlike some Varta users where a bat can fail after 2 years or so.

I also use Bosch Silver 63A and is rock solid,I like to listen music in my friends garage for hours and if I want to start the car it doesn't make the smallest difference.

.

But as already stated, the Varta Silver and the Bosch S5 are identical batteries produced on the same production line to identical specs and warranty. The only differences are the stickers on the case. Oh and the price (Varta is cheaper). :)

is possible,we in Romania have Rombat (national manufacturer) and sells bulk batteries to Varta and Bosch .

If a battery with a 5 year warranty fails every 2 years I would have a lifetime supply of free replacement batteries :D

because you are lucky to have 5year warranty

We have 2 yr

So far so good, got a status update on Ebay to despatched, hopefully thats true and not an automated status change like lots do.

Doesn't work like that. I had a 4 year warranty battery that failed after 3+ years. The new battery they fitted was only warranted until the end of the 4 years of the original battery warranty.

Prob more depends on the companies individual policy, I have had things fail in warranty and then new one comes as an individual part backed by manufacturers warranty from first use. Some may be from purchase date instead I think?

Just phoned TPS as the battery on my vrs is on its last legs.... £41 plus vat for a genuine vw ' budget ' battery.

Didn't think that was too bad at all.
