Which Alternator?

Featured Replies

All,

I have a 06 Fabia 1.4 16v Ambiente hatch. Engine code is BBZ and it does have AC. Alternator makes a whine and has done for a while. Car is over 100000 so thought it best to just replace.

Question is which version of alternator should it be? By my reckoning I am after a 90A output with the four point mounting. Anyone got the real knowledge for this? I am working on just what I can see online and understand from the large number of different alternator types.

Thought I would ask here before going off to the dealer to ask them.

Thanks

Chris

Sure it's not the clutch pulley? Common on the bosch alternator. Mine was whining and I replaced it a few weeks ago for £30. Search forums or Google search, really common. INA is OE manufacturer

i got a 90 amp of a fabia vrs with aircon £50 delivered anywhere uk mainland if any good

and now 1 for a 1.4 elegance breaking

The OP has a petrol engine car, so it does not have a clutch on the pulley. 90 Amp will be good, I replaced the alternator on my daughter's late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 85PS, that alternator was identical to the one fitted to my wife's late 2002 Polo 1.4 75PS.

So, I'd reckon that your car will have the same one if it is a Bosch - have a good look armed with a Haynes repair book to check which one it is (Bosch or other), then try to read off some numbers - I can supply numbers for the Bosch one tomorrow. I seem to remember that the last part of the VAG part number was "M"

If you want to buy a quality rebuilt Bosch one that is identical to what is currently fitted, then maybe have a look on the ECP site - I think that they cost roughly £115 when you have handed back the old one in reasonable condition - the one I returned, the ECP guy said, was the best he had seen!!

If possible measure the drive pulley diameter and try to match it with new one, I went from 59mm to 60mm to save quite a bit of money, so far so good!

Finally, maybe what you want from your Skoda dealer is a print out of your car's CAR DATA - that listing includes alternator O/P, ECP listing was a bit vague and did not agree with what the Ibiza should have had fitted, so it pays to know some facts before starting to buy, but I'd still reckon for a BBZ with AC 90Amp would be the one.

It's no use steveo, he has a petrol car with a fixed pulley, if you're going to sh!t up every thread trying to flog stuff at least make sure it's suitable.

awww touchy....

The bearings are whining, that's for sure. The alternator performance shoundn't be affected. Mine was making a funny noise when I bought the car at about 100.000 miles. I had the bearings replaced and my steering pump refurbished in October 2013, for under 80 pounds. They are still working as new, after more than an year and 10.000 miles.

Thanks for all the advice.

Not sure about the bearings noise. Not really a bearing sound. Plus have had issues with power failure whilst running AC etc. Had the classic PAS pump issue connected with no power for it from the battery (or at least that's how I read it online!)

Having had a scout around I have found a website that gives me the alternators with the engine codes they are designed for (and then also where the design changes in line with the chassis number) so I think I am sorted.

I will have a look under the bonnet for the alternator number, hopefully can use that to give me an idea of the part!

Thanks to all.

Well, I got a new unit for it (matched by part numbers by the guys selling it) and have fitted it twice now.

Initial unit didn't appear to work, queried it with them, they asked for it back, I refitted the old one (which sent everything back to normal and worked fine) and waited for another.  That arrived today, fitted it, same issue.  They just don't appear to work with my vehicle and I have no idea why.  They are the correct output for the car, 90A and as I said, matched by OEM part number, and have been fitted correctly, with everything buttoned down.

I just don't get it.

Any ideas anyone?
