Front bushes bolt stripped

Hi, So today me and my dad fitted new front wishbone bushes to my 1.4mpi and when we done up the drivers side the bolt kept spinning and we've stripped a bit of the alloy sub fame i think. 

 

Is there a way around this like a new longer bolt perhaps? or a nut and bolt?

 

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's looking like you'll have to get a new/second hand console (you can remove it on the vRS, I'm guessing it will be similar on other models of the mk1 Fabia too) or mess about trying to drill it out and re-tap it. 

as matt says, however 'messing' about to drill and rethread it using a helicoil kit is neither difficult nor expensive, you can buy the kit on ebay for £10 and that's a lot cheaper than a new console.

Appreciate the link, The bolt it's self is fine it's the threads inside the sub-frame that are knackered. So by the looks of it it's a new/used sub frame (Insert swear words/crying here) Doesn't look too easy either.

as matt says, however 'messing' about to drill and rethread it using a helicoil kit is neither difficult nor expensive, you can buy the kit on ebay for £10 and that's a lot cheaper than a new console.

Just seen this as i pressed enter, The heli coil kit looks like a tap&die set which my dad actually has i take it these are the same?

It's similar apart from you then add the threads yourself (in a coil) which then takes the hole back up to the original size so the original bolt can be used.

That seems like the way to go IMO, I really appreciate all advice given, I've got a college course starting soon and really need the car to get there. Will let the old man know this is an option for us.  :thumbup:

First thing....this is a botch job suggestion.....

The long bolt normally screws into the alloy wishbone, but the threads are now knackered in the alloy wishbone.

If, and I say if, you find a **longer bolt it would be quite possible the bolt would go straight through the alloy wishbone, and emerge from the other side.

It would now be quite possible to fit a spring washer and nut to the thread and be tightened accordingly.

 

I have (both sides) spare alloy wishbones (minus bushes) but can see how it is quite possible..

Good luck with your venture..

** Pre-threaded bar varying thickness with nuts to fit, found at B&Q or such..

 

Could take a photo to show what the alloy wishbone looks like off the car??

A helicoil is most certainly NOT a botch job!

 

Using mild steel threaded rod instead of a high tensile bolt most certainly IS!

Appreciate it i think my dads going down the heli coil route as far am im aware. It's held in by thread lock atm just so we could move it.

I believe a correctly fitted helicoil can actually be stronger than the original thread (because the thread in the 'mother material' is now larger diameter than originally, and the material of the coil is certainly stronger than the aluminium casting). Be careful with the drilling though, you really don't want to have any wobble  that results in a subtle conical shape to the start of where you'll be screwing the helical insert into. Sounds like it would be helpful, to guide the insert in after the tapping process, but trust me, it isn't... Nearly f'ed up a cylinder head by making a hash of a job of helicoiling a spark-plug hole, not that long back, after I'd fitted new valve guides and reamed them etc. Tears were nearly shed. :D

Was going to mention bolt strengths vs the un-likelihood that boggo threaded rod is anywhere near on a par. There is high-tensile bar available though. If you take a step towards local engineering supplies firms than the likes of B&Q <shudders>.

My bad, however his bodge filled me with terror, mine is a permanent repair and costs very little.  :p

I think I have a 2nd hand console if you need it ! I will check tomorrow if you want me to.

I had the same bolt sheer on my VRS, i ended up drilling it out and luckily i was just straight enough in the hole to beable to just run an M12 (the size of said bolt) tap through it and it would hold.

 

Worked fine till a garage changed the steering rack and used a rattle gun, destroying the aluminium thread!

 

Personally i would swap the mount out, but as Sepulchrave said, a Helicoil is more than suitable to repair it.

Had the same thing on my VRS found a cheap used one on eBay the wishbones are the same as the ibiza/polo-9n so a few about. Go for about £25-£30ish
