Skoda Fabia Vrs Tyres

Featured Replies

Hello to everyone.

I have been a very proud owner off a lovely green Vrs mk2.

I need to get 4 new tyres, at present I have some great conti sports, however not sure if I should go for P-Zero or if anyone has some experience of different makes of tyres. Im not a snob about this but it would be fantastic to get some feedback from other owners.

One last note, Robinson Skoda in Norwich have been fantastic helping with my car and also threw in a free sledge with my service yesterday!

plus I called them about what engine oil to use and they asked me to bring the car in and topped the oil up for free.

Thanks

Jon

Best not go for Pirelli P-Zero Nero,  they will rattle you to death.

I had 205/40 R 17 on for the tough sidewalls, they were OK.

Now i have 215/40 R 17 P-Zero on, but they are a hard ride.

PS

Top Up with the Oil yourself after checking how to do it, and do not overfill.

You want to know how much oil you have used.

If they have just Serviced it, Dip it cold and see where the Oil Level is,

Then Dip it Hot, and see.

VW 504 00 , 5w 30 Full Synthetic, or 5W 40 VW 502 00 if that is what the Invoice shows they used.

What age is the car?

& has the DSG had the Service Campaign work done since May 2014,?   Free by Skoda. They should be able to tell you.

Hello GoneoffSKI

Thanks,

I wanted to find a tyre that was a good ride but not too loud or harsh, loving the red pickup fantastic pic.

jon

tyres, I am a snob.....

depends what you want! I use track day tyres (road legal slicks) in the summer , and winter tyres on 16 inch rims (goodyear) in the winter......

a good all rounder for me was the maxxis Z1..... mid range ...

if you can afford it, hit something like a Michelin PS3!

thanks for all the advice goneoffski, I will check tomorrow.

I believe the dsg has been maintained as the dealer I bought the car from went through it all. I will ring the dealership and make sure.

Hi Sharkrider,

I would love to run the slicks thanks for the advice, I will have a look at the maxxis tyres though as the car is my daily drive.

The car is a 61 Vrs with 77k

I bought it four months ago but have only recently been using it due to an operation. I need to get it setup for my wife to use as well, however she doesnt seem to see the difference between breaking in dry and wet conditions! so probably get conti again or have a look at maxxis Z1

Thanks for all the help

Jon

Please do your own oil checking and top ups, and do not leave it to anyone else, even a Dealership.

It is a Service Campaign since May 2014 on the DSG.

Synthetic OIl changed to Mineral oil & a ECU Update if it needed it.

There should be noted in the Service Book & have a Sticker in the Boot beside the Spare Wheel.

& show on the Skoda Data Base.

I've heard good things recently about the Avon ZZ3 on a friends remapped Audi S4, he's been forced off the proper (Vee groove) Goodyear eagle F1 as its been discontinued and old stocks have inevitably dried up. They look well priced in 215/40r17 83w as well if you shop round online.

Got no complaints with rainsport 3 (215's) and good price at f1 auto centre. Had them on since summer and was ok driving back from midlands the day it snowed. BTW not saying that they are a winter tyre or even all season. Found the ride and noise to be much better than the budgets it came with when I brought. I think the price reflects their wear though since heard they do wear quickly but will find out.

Another vote for Rainsport 3, the best tyre the car had so far, apart from RS'R's of course :)

when i bought mine the dealer fitted some new fronts for me as they were lower than used approved allowed, they fitted kumho's and said over the years they had tried a fair few different tyres and they appeared best for grip vs noise.  I have to say they have been pretty good,

However since having my winters on which are 16's i am tempted to not refit the 17's and just get another set of 16's for summer as the ride is much better

I've been a naughty boy and ordered a set of 215/40/r17 Federal 595 rs-R's this afternoon. Don't actually need them just yet but didn't want to miss out on the £67.60 per corner delivered from mytyes.co.uk and a friend can fit them for beers when I'm read and the sun is out. Will start collating the suspension and brake upgrades over the next few months, then one weekend the vrs will transform into a real hot hatch.

Did you get the yellowstuff pads sharkrider?

What was the damage for those if you don't mind me asking?

£79 , ordered from awesome, they were more than that , but they have a price match promise on the £79 was from larkspeed :) (yellowstuff)

I didn't need discs originally, but I'm currently digging a hole on one :( gonna put some more standard discs on, and yellow stuff pads, since I changed the fluid for Blue racing stuff, they have been awesome :) did 2 days a the ring, (very fast track if you havent been) with no fade :) I did loose the pedal at blyton on the standard fluid, but the new stuff has fixed that :)

The last set of disc's I put on my mk1 were standard and the I drilled them myself (small cnc machine shop owner) and them with brembo oem replacement pads and dot 5.1 fluid was the best feel the brakes ever had, my mk2 is inconsistent, one minute the brake pedal is firm, next its soft and no feel, the dealership say they cant detect a problem, so will have to sort it myself like I do everything else.

I do have a full set of Leon cupra r brembo calipers on the bench at work though, looking to make some billet ally calipers form myself using the brembo pads and seals but time is hard to find at the moment to get them designed and on the machine as paying customers come first.

changing to high spec fluid worked wonders for my pedal feel under high stress on the track, I used ATE Blue racing fluid.

Sharkrider, I'm fairly new to this site. Any view of past experiences from other memebers on a full set of poly bushes?

dont think anyone has done it..... I'm putting my FARB on shortly, and will be fitting polybushes with that , but thats just because its a ball ache job to get in, and I intend to polybush as some point in the futer, so may as well do the bar while its out!

my tame mechanic thinks it will make everything too hard for road use, but I'm only 20 mm lower at the front and 15mm at the back, and with bilstiens should be a good ride still!

skud_vrs on here has coilovers and polybushes on his octy and its rock hard.....

you could be the first to try it and let us know how it goes? ;)

You are the first person to report such brakes behavior so far I've seen on here and I thought I was the only one. I have exactly the same feedback from my brakes. Even after playing with VCDS, which improved it massively as my car was set up for a minimum assist, I still get that inconsistent brake feeling. Strange thing is, when I tap the brake pedal lightly and then instantly again to brake for real brakes are proper, firm with the right level of feedback. I do not know what might be causing it. I bled them many times and they are fine. I use RBF1000 brake fluid and Brembo OEM pads as well on standard rotors. Thinking about Brembo MAX rotors now but now sure if this will help....

I wish I had those Cupra brakes!

Let us know if you figured out what is causing this erratic brakes behavior. The only thing I have not tried is bleeding the main servo. I think there's a VCDS procedure for that but I have not found it it yet...

Likewise, its good to finally know someone else who understands that feeling, I've had the pedal touch the bulkhead on an emergency stop with no bite of feel or abs, then the next press it can be really firm and great feel, and in fast driving it's sometimes firm but more often varying degrees of spongy, it's very difficult to understand the feel between cold, hot and over heating brakes, it's very frustrating. Then there's the suspension....tut....

Just did the same from the Swedish version of MyTyres, I've been hearing so much about them RS-R's... I plan some track days in the future but I hope they are fine for everyday use as well. Can anybody comment on how easily they come to operating temps compared to, say, the Dunlops? Car has to stay usable for the wife!

How long is a piece of String really.

What Ambient Temperatures & road temperatures. ?

They are tyres, so ready to go when you are,

they are fine when the Coolant and the Oil is ready, but maybe do not push them if the road is cold or wet.

So, to recap, are tyres really "horses for courses" or does it come down to budget, performance, longevity etc etc?

I'll be looking to replace the fronts soon and would happily move away from the factory-fitted Dunlop Sport Maxxes.

Comes down to what you want, need or are prepared to pay does it not.

Maybe Horses for Courses, location location location, & are you running one set all year.
