HP laptop plugged in not charging

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So buying laptops from curry's is not a fun process,

Anyway on the second laptop, it's a HP envy and when the laptop is off it charges, but when laptop is on all it has is laptop plugged in and not charging. I also get a HP service message stating along the lines that the smart adaptor I am using is not powerful enough for the laptop.

I bought the laptop yesterday and the adaptor is the one out of the box.

Return it to curry's. Go online buy from a better seller :)

Si, if it's not cars it's laptops?! What else you planning on breaking this year?

Either the charger or battery is faulty,

Dell use the same system and a replacement charger always fixes it (with a known good battery).

Its not uncommon for electrical goods to be DOA, we get it a lot at work.

It's new take it back. No point in fannying about.

Cheers Ben,

I seem to have the magic touch with regards to anything mechanical/electrical in that it will break when I purchase it,

Its sat in my (working) car now to be taken back to Currys.

I know realistically I need to take it back but after having 2 new laptops over a 2 week period I was wondering if there was an easier way I could do it at home!

It's a very very common issue, you can test the battery in HP Assistant software installed on it, this will tell you if it's specifically a battery fault or a power adaptor. Normally power adaptor if there is actually a fault. If laptop was an ex demo or it wasn't run for the first time with regard to the battery as per the instructions, it may have failed to calibrate properly (ie firing the battery in and turning it on, not charging it until later). There are guides online as to how to approach this by way of removing Microsoft's ACPI's and restarting for an auto reinstall of them and battery to calibrate as a result of a few cycles.

If returning to currys make sure you hit them for it being faulty when purchased, don't allow them to try and send it back to HP for inspection/repair. Do not accept any BS they may come out with about their policy, you have your rights and it's their problem to sort it not yours.

Curry's have actually been really good, currently in the store and they are replacing the laptop as well as letting me see the new one running as well, very strange as the replacement had a adaptor that was twice as big as the old one!

Was the original one still factory sealed? HP have tamper seals on their boxes.

Not sure about the security seal, the box was sealed, my mistake for not checking the security tab, all sorted now though laptop is sorted and all working

Knowing you I give it 3 weeks :)

Going on previous form, as BJB above has said - for how long is the question!

Behave both of you, its only cars that I break...last laptop lasted 5 years and was still going, I wanted something quicker for Elite...

Sounds like they had mixed up the adapters - for some ranges, most of the laptops will use compatible chargers but while the lower power laptops can use any of the adapters in the range, the higher power laptops need the higher powered adapters otherwise you'll normally get a warning that the adapter isn't suitable and it won't charge/run the laptop properly.

That makes sense John, as the adaptor originally would charge the laptop when it wasn't running, as well as run the laptop when it was plugged in but didn't have enough get up and go to actually charge it.

I had a look afterwards at the first adaptor and it was the same one that was included with my better halfs laptop which is a 13inch laptop and does not have dedicated graphics etc.

How long have you left it for?  I had this problem with a PC and some people were saying it took eight full cycles of trying and giving up before it properly gave up, for the one I was working on it took around three and a half hours but it did sort itself out eventually.

it took about an hour for it to sort itself, I left it in the end due to not being able to do anything, It seems to be running again though.
