tdi 110 sudden power loss but no management light

Featured Replies

Hi Guys.

I have just brought a 110 03 plate tdi. It only has 70000 miles (6000 per year) and judging by the ware it looks like it has been driven steady!

The turbo seams to fail if i go up the revs (but not always)

The engine management light does not flash.

I think it maybe sticking turbo veins or ecu but if these fail does the Engine management light always flash?

I have booked it in to be terracleaned and code read tomorrow but was wondering if anyone had any ideas before i spashout £108 on a clean.

It has the potential to be a quality cheap mile muncher. But i want to keep it cheap!

P.s does the mk1 have a LCD screen in the centre of the dials? If so mine does not work! The handbrake ect lights work but there is no led readout. it's a elegance spec model.

Sounds most likely to be a split hose. Check out all the 3mm internal diameter vacuum hoses pay particular attention to those from n75 to the turbo actuator.

I would change the lot as it is a very cheap repair and they are probably well past their best at 12 year's old.

Often overlooked. Do this before you spend £108. You can get some great silicone hoses from Ebay for about £5 and buy from a seller who sells a lot and has excellent feedback.

You will need approx 5 metres

If it has been driven gently and low miles then sticky turbo vanes is quite likely. An over boost fault will probably not bring on the glow plug light (doubles up as the CEL), it never did on mine. If it is sticky vanes then teraclean probably won't help.

Definitely sounds like over boost fault. If a 3mm pipe is leaking it will overboost and the ecu will cut power supply to n75 solenoid valve this is a limp mode feeling totally restricted and feels like someone has turned the turbo off.

It will be an over boost from the turbo, common fault mine does exactly the same sometime. It's caused by sticking veins in the turbo. There is a thread about it somewhere on here. Teraclean do advertise a clean for the turbo, but get it code read first. No engine management light on a diesel it's the glow plug light that acts as EML. As for the dash only the top of the range Laurin & Klement had the display in the centre of the dash yours will be in the rev counter display and you use the end of the indicator stalk to scroll through the menus. Depending on model. Hope that helps?

Cheers for the reply flaperpjack7 would split pipes show up if i have the codes read?

Will throw a charge pressure control lower/upper limit reached fault code.

+1 for sticking turbo vanes. Mr Muscle fix needed

do the pipes just pull off if you were to replace the pipes for new ones?

And if i was going to mr muscle it where would i stick my nosle   :notme: ?

Thanks for the advice guys

The pipes usually have metal pinch clips on. You need to carefully cut these off .

Very much doubt it's the pipes, it's pretty much certain it's the veins in the turbo. There is a thread on here about it.

If it goes into limp mode around 3000 rpm when accelerating hard such as overtaking or climbing a hill then it is the turbo vanes refusing to moves due to carbon build up. With 6000 miles per year this is highly likely, especially if most the miles were around town or with a cold engine. Mine started to do this at about 55,000 miles. I had the turbo taken out and mechanically cleaned by a specialist in this common problem.

Agree with this, did mine with Mr Muscle before the winter (It cleans the EGR up lovely too!) and have used Millers eco Diesel additive since to try and cut down on the smoke when its cold........and it is like new again.......just approaching 216K

I have a brand new box of Innotec turbo cleaner that I bought for this exact same problem but manually exercising the VNT linkage got it working - then I sold the car so the Innotec stuff is still in it's original unopened packaging.

Downside is that it's an invasive cleaner - you need to remove the exhaust pipe from the turbo to get the stuff inside - all instructions are with the cleaner.

If you want it I can do 50% off RRP, PM if you're interested.

Did the Mr Muscle trick on my old 52 Plate Elegance 110 tdi a few years ago, the VNT actuator was stuck solid before i started, after soaking the inner vanes in Mr Muscle it started moving but was very gritty, persever with working it back and forth and it soon shifts the carbon.

Massive cloud of black smoke on first run through the gears but it was pretty much perfect after that. Give it a real good kicking now and again will keep everything blown through nicely

Im surprised some people still ask when the turbo cuts out on these older engines. There are soooo many topics on the subject and the result is, nearly aleays, Mr Muscle. OK, occasional leaky pipe, or fuel filter, or something. But leaky pipe means smoke out the back doesn't it, and blocked fuel filter is intermittent.

mr muscle, 4mm pipe, some allen keys, some spanners or sockets, and 2hrs of patience or you will be repeating.
