VRS Estate tdi or Scout 184

Well just back from driving both the Scout and VRS and what can I say. Loved both cars!!

Both completely different characters.

The Scout is very stealth like with 184 hp, and AWD it can move, pulling away from the traffic lights it was rapid. Gave it a bit of welly coming out of a damp roundabout and boy did it go, no drama just tremendous traction.

Corners not as good up to 60mph a little more roll than my Mk3 150 but ok, push on and over 70 and it starts to get upset (to be expected with +33mm ride height)

Quite liked the DSG need a need a good push on the accelerator to get it moving, once on the move very smooth.

Summary: A ‘point and shoot’ car rapid in damp conditions, surprising competent in corners.

The VRS (estate) in metallic black looked absolutely fantastic, I was a bit worried that the ride may be too hard, however, was very acceptable.

Regarding cornering, very good at any speed it just held the road, lovely car to drive.

Summary: Was a little disappointed with the performance compared with the Scout. Would have the petrol car in an instant (sadly not in budget).

So which one?

This morning based on looks the VRS, after driving them both the Scout, tomorrow back to the VRS?

Both cars have great attributes, the Scout for its stealth performance and traction, the VRS for looks and handling.

In truth none would disappoint   - please Mr Skoda can I have a VRS with AWD?

Now the hard part, filled in all the paper work just the model type left blank, given myself till Monday to decide – HELP!!

  • Get the Scout. It is a 4x4 version of the vRS!

  • I've had the MkII 140 Scout and now have a VRS. The Scout was great, relatively cheap and never let me down but I never really got to properly like it - no adrenaline, satisfying handling, excitement

  • @Genoa1893. Don't take this the wrong way but if I was getting a car to use where you live I'd want one with plenty of protection! A Citroen Cactus springs to mind.

If only they'd sell the non Scout 4x4 version in the UK... :peek:   I picked it because I feel it has the best of both worlds.

...not only in the UK... indeed you decided for the most interesting combo. After all you can improve suspensions on the Elegance!

They do but only with the 150ps engine, still it can be remapped to around 200ps :)

VRS all day long.....looks better, has the nicer interior....sure it may not quite have the traction benefits of the Scout but it probably handles/drives better in most circumstances.

I reckon unless you are a bit of an SUV estate die hard once the novelty of the 4wd has worn off you'll likely start wishing you'd bought the vRS.

I bought an Elegance instead of a vRS....as soon as the novelty of the extra toys over and above my old Mk2 vRS wore off Ive done nothing much but think about changing it for a vRS.....not that its a bad car in any way far from it but a really fun/enjoyable drive it is not just v competent.

Scout for me. I've covered high mileage in a vRS and the stiffer suspension and low profile tyres got tiresome on our quickly deteriorating roads.

I was OK trading performance for comfort and 4x4 moving from a vRS to a Scout.

Now the diesel Scout is more powerful than the vRS and has better traction then there is no contest.

The one thing the vRS has going for it is the looks. A fantastic looking car.

Decisions decisions. Perhaps the questions below might help.

Do you live in or near Glasgow?

The advantage of 4x4 is traction in damp and slippy conditions. Does it rain a lot on the west coast of Scotland?

The disadvantage of sporty cars is a harsher ride? Do you have well maintained roads around Glasgow?

Hi scottalej

I live in a village about 10 miles East of Glasgow so the 4x4 would be very useful in the winter.

So, desision has been made... it's the Scout.

Just need to decide on colour denim blue or metallic grey.

Cheers

Rob

Out of those, metallic grey.

Looks good in white or silver as well because it's a good contrast with the black plastic parts. Race blue is another option as it's just a great colour in mho.

I'd have gone for the Scout if the option existed when we got the vRS.

The only thing I would miss on the vRS is the looks and the leather/memory seats (I don't understand why easy wipe clean leather is not an option on the supposed rugged, get it muddy car!).

Rob, this thread will be very long: model sorted, coulour still to decide..and then the extras ;)

Out of those two for me it would be metal grey. A mate of mine has the denim blue (normal octy, non-scout), I think it's too much of a babyblue. I would certainly advise so see the car in the flesh in that colour before ordering one. The normal silver looks pretty good on a Scout I think. White is a little counterproductive on a car that's supposed to get dirty.

And whatever you do get the pano roof, especially if you have kids, and Xenons....and a spare wheel

I picked denim blue for our Elegance because I like how it looks with the chrome, plus it's not a very common color, so it'll stand out a bit (in a subtle way).

Hi Guys

Thank you very much  for all your input, it's been very much appreciated.

I started this journey in January trying to decide between the VRS and the Scout, however, I've made my decision and its the Scout.

Happy to explain why if anyone is interested.

Thanks again

  • 2 months later...

The vRS has model specific chassis tuning, Golf PP front brakes (which are epic by all accounts) and progressive steering which is not an option on any other Octavia.

Sorry for the thread necromancy.

But I was just going through some papers, and I noticed something. In the specs, all versions are listed with progressive steering as standard, inluding the vRS.

I couldnt find anything about the steering that was vRS only.

So are there any difference at all?
