Long-Interval Service Items - "Sprich zu mir"

Recommended Posts

Right, I've done some more work for you:-  EFF129 is 151mm long (and its diameter is 61mm and 55mm - larger at regulator end) - these dimensions equate to a bare filter element.   EFF234 is 161mm height (long!) and its diameter is 61mm and 55mm - larger at regulator end - these dimensions equate to a filter+regulator combo.

Note, picture of EFF129 shows it fully built up with separate regulator without quoting "only filter element", EFF234 currently has not got a picture!

Hope that helps a bit more, I'd expect EFF234 to cost a bit more than EFF129 - maybe check that and if so ties in with what I've written above.

Thanks. Good stuff.

This article, from across the big pond, may be of interest to the wider Skoda owning community:-

http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/219

They are advising 60,000 miles for replacement of "Lifetime" fuel filters external to the fuel tank and 100,000 miles for same located inside the fuel tank (Apparently some of the Jap manufacturers do this nowadays, Basically you replace the pump and filter).

Let's hope ERWIN has got a procedure for Fuel Flow Test - last time I did a quick visit I didn't notice it.

I see from the BMW forums that they've got the same issue. One cheeky chappy on there suggested that with all these "Lifetime" fit parts and fluids, then there should be a lifetime BMW warranty to go with it. Sadly not.

The E-mail reply from Skoda Customer Services:-

"Thank you for your email dated 27 January 2015 regarding your ŠKODA Fabia.

I have checked with our Technical Department and they have confirmed that there are no recommendations in the service intervals for the replacement of the petrol fuel filter, manual gearbox oil or power steering fluid.

If you would like to have these items replaced then your ŠKODA Retailer would be able to perform these tasks and charge you accordingly.

I trust this information has been of help to you, but should you require any further help then please feel free to contact me on the telephone number listed below.

Thank you once again for contacting ŠKODA UK Customer Services."

When I asked this question in response:-

"Thank you for your reply

One further question.

Do I  take it from the omission in  your response below that there is a service interval for the engine coolant. What is this ?

For your information, as far as I am aware, the cooling system on my contains the original factory fill fluid, which is pink in colour. "

I was told over the telephone that there is similarly no recommended interval for renewal of the cooling system fluid - (Haynes manual says the recommended interval is two years unless the long-life G12 (Pink)  is used)

I understand that Valvoline manufactures  VW's G12 and BASF helped develop it. interesting to see what they have to say.

Doesn't seem that the American forums have much confidence in the European Auto industry "Lifetime fill/fit" concept :-

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1069859

I'm now working on the assumption that all these items need replacing.

Anybody know what the labour hours/costs and materials costs would be for replacing:-

a). The manual gearbox oil

B). The power steering fluid

c). The G12 coolant

d). The fuel filter.

Had the service done today.

They replaced the fuel filter and the gearbox oil and did the annual service. Fine. Total charge  fuel filter change and gearbox oil change £118 (Approx)(Labour + parts, ex -VAT).

Only realised when I got home they haven't done the MOT (Which they have done without fail for the last 9 years) and another first,  I got an engine management light come on  the way home.

That's going to have to go back.

Had the MOT done Wednesday.(Luckily they managed to extinguish the EM light in the Instrument binnacle).

Bad news came Wednesday PM when I got a phone call from the shop to say that their VAG diagnosis system had picked-up an EGR fault which they initially claimed required the valve to be changed for £350 + VAT

I made it clear that the car hadn't been having before the service any of the usual symptoms of a non-operative or coked-up EGR,  i.e. engine  stalling at lights, surging, engine momentarily stopping and restarting whilst in overrun which I clearly recall from the first time when I had the valve cleaned, by the same dealer, in 2011 (18,000 miles ago). I also pointed out that I'd done a VDCS scan on the car on Wednesday morning before I dropped it in to the dealer for MOT and its was showing nothing for the EGR.

They then said maybe it could be cleaned for £40.  I said no, don't do it. Let me have a look at it first.

Anyway, the first VDCS scan was done on Wednesday morning (before they had it for the MOT) and it showed NO FAULT ON EGR (Although there are a **** load of other electric faults:-

Just have to keep my eye on the fuel consumption and for any symptoms.

I presume that changing the fuel filter earlier in the week first manifested itself as a EM light and that when they got rid of that for the MOT that it popped-up again as an EGR fault. This could just be random electrical effect. Luckily I asked  the chief mechanic to clean out the plenum chamber (Done Wednesday) as I thought that may have been the cause of all the other electric faults I was getting - apparently not from the latest VDCS scan.

The whole things laughable, dealers are compelled under pain of penalty under the Control of Pollution/Construction and Use legislation to get exercised about non-compliance with Euro IV exhaust regulations ' cause a faulty EGR valve isn't quite hitting the target vis-a-vis CO and NO2 emissions, meanwhile the engine can be spewing out unburnt oil mist like a crop sprayer cause engine oil use limits, in worn engines, of up to 1 litre per 600 running miles are acceptable ! Derrrrr !

  • 2 weeks later...

The thread must live.

Two weeks after the annual service and replacement of the "Lifetime" fuel filter and gearbox oil and a couple of long runs, the new components have bedded-in.

I have to say it most noticeable that the acceleration on the car, especially on motorways, is now back to what it should be. The old fuel filter must have been so clogged that it was impeding flow at the top-end of engine operations, leaning out the mixture and raising the combustion temperature.

As for the gearbox, way smoother and now the synchro hubs are not intermittently sticking as they used to. It was reported on service that the gearbox had been losing oil at the shaft seals, so replacing the oil has temporarily fixed that as well. Though they are supposed to regularly check the gearbox oil level on normal services.

There is a slight occasional hesitation when picking-up the throttle after drifting through traffic,. which I suspect could be the EGR valve sticking. I'll have to scan again to see if the EGR  Fault code has come up again.

In short, I'd recommend people change these components for a better driving experience. Perhaps a good interval would be the same one as is used for the cam-belts now i.e. 4 years or 40,000 miles, which ever is less, rather than at 60,000.

Ah well, wrt the fuel filter, maybe - wife's car is over 103K on the original one, warmer weather coming and a car change coming as well sometime in the next few months, probably smarter to fit the new filter/regulator combo than chuck it in the bin after the car has been sold!!

If the wife's just pootling round town, then she probably won't "Taste the difference". But its, certainly noticeable on motorways.

If this "Lifetime" *******s, is as suggested on the American forums, a marketing gimmick, aimed at Fleet owners, in an  attempt to convince them that the true costs of ownership can be pushed to the right of the ownership timeline, then I don't want to play, even if it costs me a few extra quids. Whose to know, whether dirty, lifetime fuel filters, haven't been, at least,  in part responsible, on the early Fabia injection engines (And perhaps the later ones) , for a build-up of fine dirt in and around the injectors which allowed the injectors to leak raw fuel into the combustion chambers when the engine was off.  This in turn led to excessive cylinder bore wear and early demise of those engines.
